Today we got into our new learning groups. We set goals for our co-operative task.

Jude made this map to help us with our treasure hunt...

Treasure Hunt
On Friday 20\3\2015 Matariki and Mahutonga went on a Treasure hunt for our inquiry, ‘What is in our backyard’?

We had to find native Flora and Fauna in the school grounds and down at the beach. We were put in nine activity groups and each of the groups got given a grid map of Worser Bay, and a checklist, we had to take pictures for evidence of what we found.

We had heaps of fun finding the native Flora and Fauna.
We found Kohwai, Pohutukawa trees, Toi Toi, Huntsman’s Toilet paper, Puriri, Kawakawa, Karaka and Taupata.
The Fauna that we found was, Crabs, Jelly fish,Butterflies, Spiders, Millipedes, Stick-insects and we found lots and lots of Starfish!!
We got given a point on our map where we had to go and find our treasure, when we got there their was a bag for or group and the treasure was…. Lollies, “Mmmmm Lollies ”!

Everyone had a great time on a great day!

Jungle Art

By Hunter: In Mahutonga and Matariki we have been drawing different types of leaves and putting our avatars on there. Firstly it was meant to be a New Zealand native plants, but then it turned into a crazy jungle with blue mushrooms, rainbow leaves, pink flowers, pineapples  and bananas. Our inspiration was Henri Rousseau he is a painter and here is one of his paintings:

Leaf Prints

We had to choose a leaf, and put black paint or ink on one of the sides, and press the side of the leaf with the ink/black paint on a piece of paper and made these beautiful artworks that you can see down below! By Charlie

Pizza Making

Pizza Making from Nicola Stevenson on Vimeo. Movie by Rory and Angelina

Pizza

"Oh yuck" I said as I kneaded the dough, it was squishy through my fingers. Then we put the ingredients on the pizza. We put on sun dried tomatos, some pineapple, cheese, ham and black olives. Then we put it in the oven.

John  told us to come back in an hour and 10 minutes, but he didn't tell us why…

When an hour and 10 minutes had passed, Suz came and got us. John was already there. I sniffed the delicious smell of the pizza coming out of the oven. Suz asked us to go outside and after 1 minute she  came out holding the pizza in her hands. She laid it on my lap me and Janne ate like princesses. In seconds, we had finished it.

Coding Craze

Today we did coding it was lots of fun. Coding is what makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps and websites.

We used Hour of Code to learn how coding works. You have to put blocks together so that objects on the screen move.

We will be learning how to use Scratch and make our own games.

The Routeburn Track: Great Walk Competition

As part of our inquiry, "what is in your backyard" we will be learning about what is in New Zealand's backyard. We will focus on one of the great walks - The Routeburn Track:

We will be entering a competition.

We will be tracking walks that we do at school.

It would be great if you could track walks that you do after school or at the weekend. Please take some pictures and describe the route. Please send these pictures to Nicola: nstevenson@worserbay.school.nz

All pictures, movies, presentation etc. will be added to:

Read more about the competition at: http://www.doc.govt.nz/getting-involved/events-and-awards/virtual-great-walker/about/

Nicola started us off and walked 4km...

"I walked from Karori to Tory St. There are some great views on the way. It is mostly downhill. I saw a kereru, but it flew away before I could take a photo of it."

Tautoru will also be entering the competition. They have been learning about the Heaphy Track.

Here is one of Gillian's walks:

Tawa Tawa Reserve-- 3.05 K walk with Debbi and Penny
The walk starts in a field and then goes up a track and over a ridge. On the walk I saw some palms, lots of fennel, some toi toi and lots of gorse!  On one side of the ridge you can see out to the south coast and on the other side you can see Mt. Victoria and the harbour.      photo 1.JPGphoto 1.JPGphoto 3.JPGphoto 3.JPGphoto 3.JPGphoto 1.JPG
At the top there are sometimes horses and I have to put the dogs on the lead.  There’s also a statue

Here is the view from the top:

Chrissy’s walk from Museum hotel to end of oriental parade and back again

Distance: 1.6Km one way 3.2Km return

Here is the track:
The terrain is flat and on the road. There is a beautiful man made beach and a couple of cafes that you can stop at if you want to. We saw boats, seagulls and pohutakawa trees.

Down the bank...

Nicola hadn't been down the bank yet so we took her on an adventure. We were looking for fauna (especially insects), flora treasure and anything else...

This is what happened:

Nicola goes down the bank from Nicola Stevenson on Vimeo.

Brian (a ranger from the council) came in to talk to us about the fauna in our local area.

Brian talked to us about pests. He held up a picture of hedgehogs. Hedgehogs look cute, but they eat lots of our native insects. We are holding insect legs in the picture (above). Hedgehogs can eat all of these insects in one night.

This is poo from different pests. We will investigate what animals the poo has come from. Find out more about pests at:

Brian showed us a homemade trap. We have been designing our own traps.
