The Routeburn Track: Great Walk Competition

As part of our inquiry, "what is in your backyard" we will be learning about what is in New Zealand's backyard. We will focus on one of the great walks - The Routeburn Track:

We will be entering a competition.

We will be tracking walks that we do at school.

It would be great if you could track walks that you do after school or at the weekend. Please take some pictures and describe the route. Please send these pictures to Nicola: nstevenson@worserbay.school.nz

All pictures, movies, presentation etc. will be added to:

Read more about the competition at: http://www.doc.govt.nz/getting-involved/events-and-awards/virtual-great-walker/about/

Nicola started us off and walked 4km...

"I walked from Karori to Tory St. There are some great views on the way. It is mostly downhill. I saw a kereru, but it flew away before I could take a photo of it."

Tautoru will also be entering the competition. They have been learning about the Heaphy Track.

Here is one of Gillian's walks:

Tawa Tawa Reserve-- 3.05 K walk with Debbi and Penny
The walk starts in a field and then goes up a track and over a ridge. On the walk I saw some palms, lots of fennel, some toi toi and lots of gorse!  On one side of the ridge you can see out to the south coast and on the other side you can see Mt. Victoria and the harbour.      photo 1.JPGphoto 1.JPGphoto 3.JPGphoto 3.JPGphoto 3.JPGphoto 1.JPG
At the top there are sometimes horses and I have to put the dogs on the lead.  There’s also a statue

Here is the view from the top:

Chrissy’s walk from Museum hotel to end of oriental parade and back again

Distance: 1.6Km one way 3.2Km return

Here is the track:
The terrain is flat and on the road. There is a beautiful man made beach and a couple of cafes that you can stop at if you want to. We saw boats, seagulls and pohutakawa trees.
