The beat goes on

In the senior area we continue to refine and practise our percussion skills. We've been learning to keep the beat and follow a rhythm. We have also been talking about what different percussion instruments are made of: wood, skin, metal and plastic. We've been having a lot of fun experimenting playing different types of percussion instruments. Take a listen...

What to do in an emergency

This week we have been learning about how to help others in an emergency. People from St Johns in Schools came in and talked with us about how to keep someone safe. We learned about:
 - how to put someone in the recovery position
 - how to bandage bleeding
 - how to do CPR.
For CPR we used the letters DRS ABC to help us remember to:
 - Dangers: look for them before we help someone
 - Response: is the patient responding?
 - Send for help
 - Airway: put the head back to clear the airway so they can breathe
 - Breathing: check for 10 seconds whether they're breathing, if not do -
 - CPR: see where their armpit is and come across the chest to the middle. From here press hard (the beat should be like when you sing Row, Row, Row Your Boat). Stop if they start breathing!

Everyone really enjoyed this learning and participated fully. Look out for the certificates coming home.

Super Ten

We have been learning about Super Ten and practising was to make it using different materials. When you use a super ten adding and subtracting is much faster. It means you don't have to use your fingers and can use your basic facts more to solve problems.

Parent workshop on reading with your child

Thanks to all those who came along to our workshop on reading today. We shared some decoding and comprehension strategies, and some popular books. Remember to show your child that you enjoy reading, and that you do it often.

Have a look at the Worser Bay library website for some more ideas for books to read with or to your child. We're going to put together a list of books with the students that they enjoy and will share it on the blog shortly.

Wake up your brain!

How do you choose to wake up your brain? We have a choice of three activities, the usual ones are: boot camp, yoga and singing. Sometimes we can also choose drama, running or skipping. Here are some photos of some of the yoga sessions. We've been so fortunate with the weather this term that we've been able to do yoga outside every day (well, except one).

We do at least two sun salutations everyday because we always balance the body when we're doing yoga. Then we do a variety of poses, partly depending on children's preferences. We've done a few handstands this week. Sometimes we finish with a little meditation or bee breathing where we block our ears and bzzzzzzz. Give it a try, what do you hear?

Cold Porridge! Yum!

Teddy plays Bob the porridge eater in the short film, 'Yum! Cold Porridge'. He acts like a seasoned professional, a Hollywood veteran as he eyes up the bowl of porridge and then requests toast.
He goes on to pretend that he doesn't like what he is eating! Watch his eyes screw up as he swirls the cold goo around in his mouth before he gallantly swallows.

Such great acting Teddy!

Zach has written about the experience; a delicious piece of writing Zach!

Cold Porridge! Yum!

Bob sat down at the table.
He grimaced as he looked deeply into the bowl. He groaned, his face grim. He smelled it before he saw it.
“I WANT TOAST!! NOW!”
He could barely look at the mush on his plate. Slowly he raised the spoon to his mouth. His face said it all as he bit down on the the cold soggy mush.

His eyebrows tingled, he swallowed the mess.

Eeeww!

Thinking and Behaving Like Scientists

Thinking and Behaving Like Scientists:

We had another close up look at Mussels today.  As we observed them we noticed some amazing things.
  • There shells actually have growth rings on them
  • There are whole ecosystems living on, in and around Mussels (we found Chitons, Limpets, other Mussels, Crabs and Seaweeds living on or in them)
  • We found the Mantle which is the outer part of the flesh of the Mussel.  It is the Mantle which ‘makes’ the new shell, secreting minerals to build it.
  • We noticed the Mussels smelt strong, of the sea or seaweed, very salty!
  • We noticed the difference between male and female Mussels (the females are orange and the males are white).

As we have been looking at the creatures which live in the tidal zone we are noticing how amazing, and how varied they all are.  The more you look the more you discover!

Zucchini Cake!

Zucchini cake
Before the Easter holidays John´s literacy group got to invent some recipes with the main ingredient being zucchinis. John and John’s literacy group all inspired me to try a recipe at home. So on Monday this week I decided to make a zucchini cake. So if you would like to make a zucchini cake just read this recipe below and you can try it yourself!!!

Zucchini Cake

3 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tsp vanilla essence
125g butter, softened
1/2 cup plain unsweetened yoghurt
250-300g grated zucchini
250g chocolate chips
2 1/2 cups flour
1/4 cup cocoa
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp mixed spice

In a food processor or using a beater mix eggs, sugars and vanilla.
Add butter and yoghurt, blend until smooth.
Fold in zucchini and chocolate and combined dry ingredients.  Mix gently.
Spread into greased cake tin and bake at 180 degrees for 50 minutes.
Keep in the fridge.

What happened to my Zucchini cake?

Molly made an amazing Zucchini cake and we ate it.  It was devoured, annihilated, devastated, destroyed, alongside a cup of tea during morning break in the staffroom.  It was delicious Thanks Molly!

Football Fever

Last Wednesday we had 2 teams that participated in Eastern Zones Football. It was a super sunny day and we had great fun. It was quite a competitive day with some really challenging games played. We held our heads high though and gave our very best right to the end. Big thanks to the parents who came along to coach and manage our teams. Next term we look forward to Eastern Zones Netball and Cross Country, so if you are keen get training over the holidays.
