Praying Mantises by Ethan

Since lockdown began, Ethan has been working on his own Inquiry inspired by the 'What is in your backyard?' activity.

Now that it is finally complete, Ethan wants to share his learning with everyone. What a wonderful way to showcase all our Learner Attributes! He tino pai tō mahi, Ethan.

There is a very special message at the end that Ethan would like everybody to take away from this.

Enjoy!

Visitors from Zealandia

photo 5.JPG
On Monday the 15th, two visitors from Zealandia came to talk to us about trapping and what pests are. They brought with them a bird house and four traps for mice and rats. The bird house was a gift to us because a group of girls, Emma S, Emma M, Josie, Betty Jo and Danielle set up a fundraiser for Zealandia. They gave a cheque to staff at Zealandia during the last week of school last year. It will be interesting to see whether the nesting box will attract any visitors? Did you know that some birds don’t make their own nests. Kaka and Ruru (Morepork) are two such species living within the Wellington area. Which of these birds is most likely to be first to set up house at Worser Bay School? What will happen if Sparrows try to move in instead? We had a really great time learning about pests, different types of birds and where they live.

Louis' Penguin Inquiry

For my inquiry, I decided that I wanted to help blue penguins. I started off researching about what predators they have and what problems they face. I looked at where they live and when they would leave their homes. Then I designed a penguin house on minecraft and took a video so that I could add this to my presentation. Hopefully, I will be able to make this in the future when dad has some time.

Library Visit: Weds- Who is in our community?

Anna- I learnt that where the Miramar library is now, it used to be a lake. I enjoyed the walk and the talk from Sharon. I am interested in the library (I am doing the Library research). My next steps are to go to the library and interview at least two librarians and ask them questions about their past and their job!

Khailin: I liked learning about Miramar’s past.

Charlie P:  I liked learning about how the library used to be a lake & more!

Zoe.R: I learned a lot about what Wellington used to look like and what Wellington used to look like and what it look likes now. The librarian told us a lot about Miramar. Definitely check out the Miramar Library!

Blake: I learnt that the Miramar library used to be under a swamp. I also looked at a book with some friends and it was about what Wellington used to look like in the past and what it looks like now!

Alex P: I really like learning about Miramar Peninsula, the library & the lake
