The Wrap 2016

We sang some songs, we ate our picnics, the Year Six kids did their speeches, the teachers did a funny dance and we did a haka. What a fun night!

Kaitiaki - beach clean up

We went to Worser Bay Beach and did a rubbish clean up this morning. We headed north over the rocks and explored as we searched for rubbish.

We walked across the rocks and collected rubbish.  We found lots of plastic, glass, jandals and some band aids. There was less rubbish than we expected but we still picked up quite a bit. We looked at all the amazing nature around us: we found lots of cool creatures: big ones as well like starfish, jellyfish, snails, crabs and kina. We saw lots of different types of algae and found cool rocks ("crocks") with different patterns and colours in them. - Evie and Charlie

When we were climbing the rocks they were really really high and I didn't really like the height at first but then I got used to it and it was fun. - Charlotte

It was like rock climbing except the ground was really hard. I found very big shells that were really cool. They had holes in them that were about the size of a medium fish. - Caitlynn

Beach week - Sailing

On Monday we had a beautiful day, cloudy with light winds. Alfred (Teddy's big brother) and Zoe came and taught us some of the fundamentals of sailing. They were in the two rescue boats buzzing around us and giving us sailing tips on the water. Then we had a try, we also got to have a turn in the rescue boat and watch others. Generally we had two people in a boat and one was on the tiller steering and the other pulling in the mainsail. Sometimes one person chose to sail solo too.

It was a good opportunity to do sailing and it was really fun, because it's something you can't do everyday - Chester.

It was really fun because it was a new experience for some people and we could do it ourselves. It was fun to steer the boat and touch the buoys. I liked it because my mum went sailing when she was young - Janne.

I thought it was cool how we got the experience to learn how to do everything and what all the parts were - Gemma.

It was fun crashing into people - Rico.

It was really fun, but there wasn't as much wind as I expected - Theo.

It was really fun even though there wasn't so much wind so we couldn't move as fast as we thought we could - Cody.

It was really fun and I think that it could be something you could easily make into a hobby - Elliot.

Snorkelling at Worser Bay

On Monday and Tuesday we were lucky enough to get to try out our skills with a mask and snorkel at Worser Bay Beach. We all got in the water and gave it a go and were really excited to see lots of different sea life. Starfish, sea cucumbers, anemones, limpets, paua, a variety of fish, octopi and a conger eel to name but a few. Lot's of us are looking forward to getting out and doing more over summer. Thanks heaps to the Island Bay Marine centre for providing such a great opportunity.

Beach Week Groups and Timetable

Tena Koutou,

This is the timetable for beach week activities over the following two weeks.  Obviously much of this is weather dependent (hence the sailing which has been scheduled for quite a few days in a row).  If you are available to assist with snorkelling, please view the timetable attached and then fill in this Snorkelling and EOTC Parental Assistance Google Form to indicate your time of availability.

If you have any questions, please contact John at johnmcdougall@worserbay.school.nz

We really appreciate your help in making this programme work for our kids.
