Positive Health and Fitness

We have been working on our Positive Health by trying to improve our fitness.

We know that exercise is good for us and that we need to make it fun, so we're doing a range of activities!

This term we will be tracking our fitness by recording data. We will be regularly doing push ups, tricep dips, planks, leg raises and burpees. We want to improve the amount of exercises that we can do in a minute. We also want to improve our technique.

We have also done the beep test. We will see if our scores improve later in the term.

We are looking forward to the Worser Bay Cross Country on Tuesday. We know that we will need to show 'Grit' to do the best that we can!

Regular exercise has lots of health benefits for ākonga, such as:
  • improving fitness
  • providing an opportunity build and enhance Positive Relationships
  • increasing concentration
  • improving learning focus
  • enhancing Positive Accomplishment
  • building a stronger heart, bones and healthier muscles
  • encouraging healthy growth and development
  • improving posture and balance
  • enhancing Positive Emotions
  • encouraging a better night's sleep

Mindful walk... wake up your brain

We are doing wake up the brain differently this term so everyone experiences a range or ways to wake up the brain. This week some of us did a mindful walk to wake up our brain. It was strange to walk really slowly and see how our bodies move. We noticed lots of sounds that we don't normally hear and found ourselves feeling calmer. It was a wonderful way to start the day.

Sketching in Wake up the Brain

Some students made a plan for our Sketching time in Wake Up the Brain.

This week we have been sketching Locations. On Monday, we sketched a picture of Jabba's Palace from Star Wars. Our focus for the day, was to draw the cylindrical shapes how we SEE them, rather than what we think that they would look like.

Check out our sketches!

We all wake up our brains differently and sketching is a place that is quiet and concentrated. Feel free to comment anything that you would like to see us sketch next!

Bootcamp: Wake up the brain

This morning for "wake up the brain" some of us did bootcamp. It made me feel puffed. We did lots of running and learnt some new exercises. We did bear crawl, lunges, crab walk, star jumps, press ups steps ups. We also did some stretching. I was thirsty and ready for the day. By Blaze

Cosmic Kids Yoga

Our students have been running their own "Wake up the brain" yoga sessions. They have enjoyed the Cosmic Kids Yoga sessions. You can access them: https://sites.google.com/a/worserbay.school.nz/matarikiwbs/morning-wake-up/yoga

Speaking of Wellbeing and Positive Education, here is a note from last week's newsletter:

Student Wellbeing Parent Workshop - Tues 22 August
Our Student Wellbeing Parent Workshop is coming up fast on Tuesday 22 August at 6.45pm.

Student wellbeing, or actually wellbeing in general, is being talked about, written about, thought about wherever we turn. Wanting our children to grow up resilient, adaptable, open to new experiences and feeling good and doing good has to be something we all want. It's not just a grab bag of feel good 'stuff' - there is a science behind this.

Eighteen months ago we introduced what is known as Positive Education. “Positive Education is the bringing together of the science of wellbeing with best-practice teaching to enable individuals to thrive.” We are looking forward to sharing a bit of background, the model we use and some of the outcomes we have had with you on the 22nd.

We will hear first hand from some children, get to experience some of the activities and a couple of our parents will also be linking this with life outside school. Plus, Board members will introduce you to our Online School Policy site 'Schooldocs', many of which link in some shape or form to student wellbeing.

I'm sure you will have plenty to contribute to the discussion. It's a great chance to chat about what you do at home already in this sphere and also learn from others. That's what a community is all about. Let's grow and work together to build a strong foundation where our children can flourish.

We aren’t making a choice between wellbeing or academic pursuits as there isn’t a choice to be made!

Hardcore Hills

We start the day with a "wake up the brain" activity. Today some of us did hill sprints.

Reflections from students:

Mitchell: Today was my first time to do hill training with Nicola I was very very puffed then when we walked down to the steps I could catch my breath and sprint.

Thomas: Today we were doing lunges and we jogged and stretched. Today I was feeling really good

Alex: Hill training was pretty hard today and we had to walk down the hill and sprint up it and our body's are pretty pumped up.

Lucas: In bootcamp today we did hill climbing which is basically sprinting and climbing at the same time. We did running up the hill and walking down, I got puffed.

Hunter R: Hill training was tiring and difficult because the hill was steep.

Rim: Today we did some hill training it was very hard my heart is pumping very fast too. I was sprinting my hardest ever. The hill was a little bit steep

Why start the day with exercise?

Education expert, Dylan William in his Classroom Experiment (2 part series) works with a group of students in the UK. He introduces simple changes to their daily routines to improve their learning. One thing that he does is to introduce morning exercise for the students so they will be more focused and motivated in class.

Sketching to Wake up the Brain!

We have been sketching in the morning to wake up our brains!

The rules are: Keep your pencil moving, use a thousand lines, don’t think too hard, draw what you see (not what you think you see)
It’s very calm and it’s great fun!
