Down the Back of the Chair

By Stella and Ella

For our annual Art Celebration, Māhutonga Matariki will be showcasing poetry, short plays and artwork. Growing up, using the metaphor of the Hero's Journey from childhood to adulthood, will feed into the celebration.

We have been busy preparing poetry. We looked at the poem, Down the Back of the Chair by Margaret Mahy. Her poem inspired us to use poetic language to create our own poems in the same style.

Tangled in David's Hair by Nye

Not a single penny,
do we have,
our wallets are bare.
The only place, we have not chased,
Is uncle David’s beard or hair.

We grabbed his scalp and held him down,
Careful not to lose underwear,
We put our hands in,
and saw somethings,
which of course made us stare.

A dancing bus, a man named Rufus,
Tangled in David’s hair.
Some long lost toast, a bar of soap,
Tangled in David’s hair.

Something big, a pile of figs,
Tangled in David’s hair.

A kite, a knight, a terrific fight,
Tangled in David’s hair.

Year old milk, a bundle of silk,
Tangled in David’s hair.
A velvet chair, music to blare,
Tangled in David’s hair.

A skunk, a monk, a pan that goes CLUNK!
Tangled in David’s hair.

An empty chest,
a bug that needs rest,
Tangled in David’s hair.

A blue canary, a banana shaped tree,
Tangled in David’s hair.

A slope, a rope, the pope, a joke,
Tangled in David’s hair.
A scare, a flare, an explosive hare,

Tangled in david’s hair. A big bowl of rice,
“That's extremely nice!”,
Tangled in David’s hair.

And finally after hours of work,
(And a battle with a dangerous bear, a mysterious box,
filled with chicken-pox, and a life that is full of despair)
we found a way, to get some pay,
tangled in David’s hair,

a large pickaxe, to chop and hack,
tangled in David’s hair,
we can get precious stones,
to make our own, and give them for a share,
of their groups cash.
“Hurrah! “We say, as now we can gain enough food to feed our Aunty Elaine!

Down the back of the chair! By Olive

Down the back of the chair.
A cat, a mat, a hairy rat,
Down the back of the chair.
A smash, a crash, a bowl of mash,
Down the back of the chair.
A fish, a wish, a diamond dish,
Down the back of the chair.
A potato, a tomato, a flock of flamingos,
Down the back of the chair.
A pea, a flea, a box of trees,
Down the back of the chair.
A pool, a mule, a wooden stool,
Down the back of the chair!

DOWN THE BACK OF THE CHAIR! by Kura

He stuck his hand further down the back of the chair.
Cats, Rats, Bats flew out,
A mythical magical mat jumped out,
A sack of clowns, and a cottage lounge,
Were down the back of the chair.

There were puzzled wizards, dancing knitters,
A bee having tea,
Even Mum and her dressing gown,
Were down the back of the chair.

A clock, The Wellington block?
And the crazy computer birds,
Were down the back of the chair.
Yes, down the back of the chair.

Down the back of the Chair by Archie and Lakham

A pin, a lottery win, a mouse thats thin,
A snake, a cake, a big old rake
A pig, a twig, a big fig,
A mat, a cat, a rat thats fat,
A piggy bank, an army tank,
Down the back of the chair.

A bill, a Will and a man called Phill
A TV, a fairy taking it easy,
A chair, a bear and some underwear,
A ball, a wall, an Archie that is tall,
A dog, a frog, and a big fat log,
Down the back of the chair.

Down the back of the chair by Luc

The titanic and people in a panic,
An aeroplane, a flame,
A Lamborghini and a Ferrari,
A maserati and a bugatti chiron
Down the back of the chair

A fluffy hat that came from Russia
A uniform from Scott's College,
$1,000,000,000 bucks from the bank,
Down the back of the chair

Down the bank of the school by William

A dreadful goblin with dread(ful)locks,
One hundred and fifty alarm clocks,
A magical, mystical, mystery box,
Down the bank of the school.

A piece of pie, a secret spy,
Ten thousand flies, And a dirty tie,
Down the bank of the school.

A million tyres, the school fair flyers,
A conspiracy, to cut down a tree,
On blueprints with many dust - hints,
Down the bank of the school.
A thousand bucks, some mallard ducks,
A china cup, a seal pup,
A lions appearance was swiftly abrupt,
Down the bank of the school.

Ten million souls of pygmy moles,
And pieces of smashed glass bowls,
Tigers prowling, wolves howling,
Down the bank of the school!

That was Camp: Poetry

That was Camp by Leo

Remember the wind rushing inside you ears,
The feel of WANTING to vomit but nothing comes out? Putting the harness on,
waiting for excitement but getting scared instead.
That was camp.

Remember the walk in the bush following the fatal wire,
having a system running to get the harness
running back to a person giving it to them
then they run to the teacher and give it to her?
That was camp

Remember the zoo-break and being as silent as a statue to get a rat back?
Singing the Jurassic park theme song to get the hedgehog?
and the monkey going out of bounds and climbing a tree
That was camp

That was Camp by Fülöp

Have you ever experienced Camp?
The long, comfortable ride on the bus?
The green grass, and the river bank, all damp?
Remember how the students made such a fuss?
That was Camp.

Remember the building that welcomed you,
When you step out onto the fresh, crunchy grass?
The excitement seemed to overflow in your stomach,
The territory of Camp, so big and so vast?
That was Camp.

Remember as you stumbled to your cabin,
On that first and dreadful night?
Tired, sleepy, nervous, Your face so stark.
That was Camp.

Remember when the teacher yelled, “Lights out! Go to bed!”
When with the Camp food you were fed?
When you wriggled in your sleeping bag?
That was Camp.
Remember when you heard the light switch flick?
The kids started to chat straight away, “I cannot go to sleep.”
“Don’t worry, neither can I. Let’s talk!”
“Oh great.”
That was Camp.

Remember when you lined up on the deck,
Desperate to fill your tummy?
When you stuffed your face, With that food?
That was Camp.

Poetry Night Coming Soon. Too Much Fun!

This Poem is written from a story about two silly people arriving at a friend's house laughing.  Evan has used rhyme, assonance and alliteration to make the poem sound good.  It actually feels good in you mouth when you say it.  Have a go!

These kids are poets!
We are really excited (which means, nervous, worried, scared, etc.) about our upcoming Poetry Evening.  It is called 'Too Much Fun', because that is what everybody who comes will be having.  Or else!

We have begun to write some songs too so many of our musical talents will be on display as well.  Please put it in the dairy if it will fit.  Wednesday the 27th of November.

IMPORTANT!  This event is NOT COMPULSORY but we would love to see you there.

We started with a Haka

We have been collaborating with Auroa School. Some of our students had a great idea to write poems and put them together to share at the extravaganza. Auroa School have made a blog post about our extravaganza and collaboration: https://mrwebbauroa.blogspot.co.nz/2017/12/worser-bay-primary-school-play-and-poem.html

Otari Wilton Bush

Otari Bush

Yesterday we went to Otari bush our group did a mixture of walking and running a three hour track up and down hill. I thought that a walked and ran well and my fitness levels are high. On the walk we saw kereru and tui and lots of other native birds. We also saw the 800 year old rimu tree.
I didn't have any problems with the walk fitness wise and could've easily done it again.
We walked past cows once and they suddenly stood up and gave up a bit of a fright which sent everyone running.
Nicola lead us the wrong way on a track  and we turned round and wandered back the right way.
The terrain really changed from the bottom of the hill compared to the top.

Overall I thought it was a really fun day out and would love to do it again

Otari
The wind blows
The sun shines
The trees wave over our heads
Rimu 800 years old
Children walking, discovering, finding out
Birds fly high in the sky
Not to be seen
Kereru, tui, kaka
A rat in a trap
Huge eels swimming in the stream
Wetas causing havoc

By Lachlan and Mitchell

Otari
On the 29th of November, year four, five and six went to Otari for a walk. It was really fun. It was so refreshing and not very challenging because you could spend most of the time talking with your friends. Actually we were not allowed to talk in case we scared the birds away but we did anyway. We saw lots of different types of birds such as Kereru, Tui, Sparrows etc.     By Edie

At Otari bush walk me and my friends saw two eels. We were at the picnic spot at the end. One of the eels had bright blue eyes. We fed the eel cheese, salami, crackers and ham and they ate some of it! It was so much fun. Nick.

Weather Poem: reading with our friends from South Taranaki

Today we read a poem with a reading group from Auroa Primary School. We read a tounge twister poem about the weather. Our school focus this term is about being connected and we are enjoying connecting with our friends in South Taranaki.

Weather - Poem by Eve Merriam

Dot a dot dot dot a dot dot
Spotting the windowpane.

Spack a spack speck flick a flack fleck
Freckling the windowpane.

A spatter a scatter a wet cat a clatter
A splatter a rumble outside.

Umbrella umbrella umbrella umbrella
Bumbershoot barrel of rain.

Slosh a galosh slosh a galosh
Slither and slather a glide

A puddle a jump a puddle a jump
A puddle a jump puddle splosh

A juddle a pump a luddle a dump

A pudmuddle jump in and slide!

Flynn's Poem- When you are sleeping

Today in Tautoru, for their reading, they read Flynn's poem, "When you are Sleeping". "We liked it because he chose the best words for the purpose. It also paints a picture in our mind. During Independent writing, some of us decided to write our own scary poems. Thank you for the inspiration Flynn!"

When you are sleeping...

When you are sleeping, sneaking through streets,
Snatching, eating, gobbling, slithering, he whispers,
In Parseltongue “kill, kill, kill, KILL!”

Cats meow, dogs bark, wind flows, rain flies,
Trees drip, no one sees the monsters,
Roaming feet thudding, houses crushing,
Water rising, trees falling, ground ripping.

People growing, ideas flowing, time spinning,
Coming, going in and out, blackness falling over,
Mountains growing, trucks towing,
Rivers Flowing,
Things Roaming.

Poetry, Storms

Poetry Writing:
We have been writing poems: about storms, about what happens when we are sleeping, about what the city does in the middle of the night and we have been writing poems for Peace Week.  We have been writing some crazy songs too but we will share some of those later.
Land, Planet, Psd-File, Sky, ...
We used a William Blake poem about caring for each other and caring for our World as a model.

Long Live

                               Long live our unextinguished zest
                                     Long live our forever love
Long live our love for animals
                                     Long live the scarce green.

Long live what little freedom we have
                                  Long live the buzzing bees
                                       The colorful flowers
                                     Long live the coral reef.

                                    Long live the white rhinos
                                   Long live our brown  world
                               Long live our undented courage
                                 Long live our beautiful world.

Long live the freedom women have
                                   Long live the compassion
that has led us to both destruction and victory
Long live our love for learning.

                                       Long live our hope
Long live the good in people
                                Long live the kelp forest
                          Long live our precious rainforest

                                  Let our passion wonder
                         Let the unreasonable fighting stop
Let us thrive in green and blue
                                   Long live the peace.
                                      Long live us!                                      By Danielle

What Happens When We Are Sleeping
The basilisk roams around in the middle of the night
When you are sleeping sneaking through streets
Snatching, eating, gobbling, slithering, he whispers
In Parseltongue   kill      kill       kill      KILL

Cats meow, dogs bark, wind flows, rain flys
Trees drip, noone sees the monsters
                              Roaming feet thudding houses crushing
Water rising, trees falling, ground ripping

People growing, ideas flowing, time spinning
Coming going in and out, blackness falling over
                                Mountains growing, trucks towing, rivers
                                 Flowing things roaming.   By Flynn

Storm by Dani
Grumble rumble, treacherous churning
Raging howling thundering funnel
Clouds coiling, pots boiling
Wind smashing, trees clashing

Dark sky darkening, inside apple pie
Krackle crash smash bash, kersplash
Hail piling up outside
No one dares no one tries

Pitch black, then lightning crack
Thump whump plop throup
Rain stain, what a shame
Krackle bash bang

Clouds munching, sticks crunching
A black monster, a white fright
Which is day, what is night?
Scary fork, stabbing light

Curled up, book in hand
Wind blowing, heater going
Tv on, all together
Disaster strikes, what a night

Last night I saw the City…..

Last night I saw the city thinking,
couriers zipping along, like nerve signals,
boats drifting like ideas,
Tiny thoughts in the harbour of the city’s mind.
                                                                             by Ben

What Happens When We Are Trying Sleep…..

The leaves scatter from the wind
As cars hurry past your house
The trees sway, the sounds
Get deeper into your mind.

You struggle to get to sleep
You wonder what it’s like
On the other side of the world?
Were the murderers creep

                                                      Were the devils speak
And the monster peek into the
Bedrooms.
