Netball: Teachers V Year 6

The annual year 6 netball, in summary, was intense.

(Almost) all the Autahian and Tautorians were cheering for the year 6’s, though most (which I interviewed) said that the teachers were most likely to win, due to the odds, the teachers were on about 4 while the Year 6’s were on 1. People were very hyped for the match. Halfway through the match, hope was lost for the year 6’s, but some people still had a belief in them. Then, the unpredictable happened. The year 6’s were on a streak, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! Teachers were losing, and fast, they had to get their game up, and they did. Going from 6 to 7, nearing the end of the match. Then, came the last deciding goal, the goal worth 3 points (or so people say, which the teachers agreed with), so the people who got this goal, would advance onto the number 1 podium, while the other team, will sit on number 2. It was intense, the year 6’s had the ball, they shot about 2 times, each time it bounced off but they collected it after they had missed. The final shot was upon them, the shot, it hit the pole, and into the hoop! Everyone was shouting with joy, it truly was an amazing experience, for the viewers and the contestants. The year 6’s had won. Sure, it was not that fair, but it was all for fun, and the outcome was pretty cool too.

Kura: 

Year 6 Netball was super fun! At first the teachers were winning: 0 - 5 and then when the netball team was put on we evened it to 6 - 7 to the teachers. Apparently the last goal won or last goal 3 points so year 6´s ended up winning! If it didn't count it would've been 7 - 7.

Kura Taiao/Enviroschools Ōtari Trip 2021

Yesterday we went on an Ōtari Bush trip with Ōtari and Houghton Valley Schools. We did a bunch of cool activities and learnt heaps of new things, and, it was just the year sixes! Hooray!

Activities that we did and things that we learned:

Testing the water clearness 

Looking at what critters were in the water to see how healthy it was

 Checking the water temperature

What water types are there; Run, Pool, Riffle 

 Going for a walk in the bush

How old the oldest trees were; 850 years

 That the river came from Zealandia and then the landfill

  That Addison loves Cicadas and kept one on her face the whole time 

We were with two other schools.

Looking at bugs that we found in a pile of debris and naming them by looking at them through a microscope.

  Types of plants; Rimu, Rata, Kawakawa, Whauwhaupaku

 Learning about different types of seeds and how they disperse.

 There is this type of tree that there are only 11 of and we saw one.

Star 1: My First star was doing the kaiwharawhara stream testing, because I liked looking through the magnifying glasses and studying all the creatures closely. I also like looking for the riffles and the runs and pools, and thinking/testing if the stream was healthy (and it was quite healthy). Star 2: My second star was looking through the microscopes and looking at the details of the creatures and leaf litter. there was one scope which showed the details of which leaf or stick or animal was on top of each other. I also found a container in the lab's creature storage with dried up millipedes which were curled up and dead. The bees were kind of FREAKY!!!
  

WISH: My wish was that we had more time to look through the microscopes, because it was really interesting to study all the tiny springtails and bees and things up close, but on the bright side, the stream testing was a bit like it anyway.

Another fun thing was looking at bugs in magnifying glasses and we got to look for our own bugs in sticks and leaves and dirt then looking under the microscope. I had lots of fun.

Another star, a thing that I loved seeing was the 850 year old tree. It was so wide and big. I just wonder how much wood you would get if you chopped it down. And I wonder how much it weighs. Though the tree looks like it is 1000 years old.

I loved going on the walk and learning lots of different stories from Māori culture, they really inspired me to look on the bright side of things and we learnt about lots of different berries and their stories.

  My wish is to get out more into the bush and acknowledge all the beautiful things and how lucky we are to have a great country.

It was also fun planting the kōwhai seeds and I learnt that if you sand the seed it will be easier to let the water in.

Fresh air. 1 star. Admiring bugs and insects I learnt a lot. 2 star. It was very exciting and it was also fun. My wish is to go there again. To me it's precious.

Final blog post of 2020

Wow! What a year. We acknowledge our students and the community for demonstrating persistence and resilience (Grit) in the past year. We have so much to celebrate! Our students have continued to flourish, demonstrating all kinds of Character Strengths, humour being the one that has come to the fore most reliably across the board. The curiosity and creativity have also been evident and much of the work has been stunning.

We would like to wish our Year 6 graduates and other students leaving Worser Bay School all the best for their next learning adventure. We would also like to wish Madi all the best in her future endeavors.

Year 6 V The Teachers

As part of a Worser Bay tradition the Year 6 students played the teachers at Football and Netball. 

Year 6 Dinner 2020

Our Year Six Students had an absolute blast at the Y6 dinner last night. 

And here is a little blast from the past that we shared: 

The Poroaki

We have been continuing to develop our Pōwhiri, Mihi Whakatau and Poroaki. We were given the opportunity recently to learn more about the Kawa and Tikanga of these significant events so that we can make sure we are acknowledging our mana whenua, those who came before and the significance of this beautiful place we call ‘Whetūkairangi’. Kawa and Tikanga, as well as our special school context, guide the formalities for Pōwhiri, Mihi Whakatau and Poroaki.

The whole school Poroaki was to formally farewell all leavers and their whānau and to wish them well as they travel onwards. At the Poroaki we gifted a taonga pounamu to each Year 6 student. This symbolises the Mauri of all their experiences at Whetūkairangi and the mana and good wishes of the school community, embodied within to let them continue to Flourish.

Megan: My pounamu is very special to me. It is as if it has magic powers. It will help me to remember my Worser Bay whānau and my Character Strength of Bravery. I have so many special memories at Worser Bay. 


Raffy: Worser Bay School has taught me so many things that I will remember for the rest of my life. My pounamu will help me to remember these things. I felt happy and proud at the Poroaki. When I did my speech afterwards I felt a mixture of emotions. Sad and excited!

Hunter R: I feel like going to Worser Bay has helped me to get on stage. I feel more brave and confident now. My pounamu will help me to remember this. It will remind me that I can do it, even if I am nervous. 

Ruby: I feel like the teachers really care about us. They make so much effort into the leaver's events. I felt that the Poroaki was very special. I have learnt courage and bravery at Worser Bay. My pounamu will remind me of courage and bravery. 


Izar: My pounamu will remind me of Worser Bay School. It will help me in the future to use my bravery when getting on stage. 

Katherine: My pounamu will remind me of all of my friends and all of the fun things we did at Worser Bay School. It will help me to keep connected to other people. 

Dylan: My pounamu is special and will help me remember the teachers, my friends and the spirit of Worser Bay School. It will help me to persevere. 

Thomas: I have had so many opportunities at Worser Bay and have made so many friends. I will remember this when I wear my pounamu.

The Wrap by William

Māhutonga Matariki performed the "Banana Dance' to the tune of "Tequila" and it was silly and crazy. We showed bravery, leadership and zest. We went through a few stages of practising it. First of all, we made up some dance moves that we might have been able to use. We realised that it was going to be rainy at the warp so we had to make our dances smaller to take up less space. We had to be in time with the music. As soon as one group finished, the next group immediately started.

The Year Sixes did an act of "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" It was an adaption of the story by Dr Seuss. They did this because they are graduating. They also did a movie that we shared at the last Year 6 assembly. It was very silly!

The teachers did a performance to the YMCA. They were very silly in their item, especially Mr Nik, John, Nicola, Carl, Maddie, Jude, Scott, Beth, James, Steph, Suz, Cat, Helen and Jenny (that is all of them). We wondered why John wanted to roller skate!? We were surprised that there wasn't a big accident.

Year 6 EBIS Visit

On Tuesday the Year 6's visited Evans Bay Intermediate School (EBIS). We were welcomed into the school by a performance by the Ako Waiata group.

Some of the Year 8's spoke to us about the opportunities available at intermediate (remember Evie?!)

We were then sorted into smaller groups and had to write about something we already knew about EBIS and something we would like to ask.

Then we went into a classroom with our group for the remainder of the first session.

After morning tea we were able to participate in two of the four SPEC Rotations. The options were Digital technologies, Art, Food and Science.

After lunch we competed in a technology challenge - with prizes!

“Today we went to EBIS, it was a great time. I did Cooking, sports and at the end we did a challenge to make a poppy.
Something new I found was that quesadillas are really easy to make, also that digital tech is a lot more then devices.
Something that surprised me was that, EBIS is a lot more fun than I thought.
Something that I'm looking forward to, is to learn more about cooking and about these great things in EBIS."  Finlay

EBIS visit for Year 6 students

 On Friday we visited EBIS. We were welcomed with a powhiri then had some former students from Worser Bay School - Betty, Isaac and Jasper, talk to us about EBIS and what they like about it.We also were able to join in and experience some of the speciality areas they have - technology, food, art and science. It was a great day and full of fun.









EBIS reflection Today I went to EBIS and it was really fun. first we got welcomed by powhiri (which was really nice and welcoming). Then we got put in groups and got a feeling of being in home rooms so that was fun in home rooms we did a koohat which is a kiwi kids quiz.  Then we went to morning tea and got to see Hayley and all my older friends. And then we did SPEC and I did design tech and we meet Mr Far he was really funny and nice and he was also really good at magic. I went to foods which was really really really fun I love food tech.  After lunch we had a chose of dance, Ako, sport, music and singing I choose sport and we played volley ball and it was soooooooooooooo fun. After that we made groups of three my was Me Daisy and Orla and we made a poppy it was a competition who’s is the best structure and height. And then sadly it was time to say goodbye😭 I had a really really fun time at EBIS thanks EBIS for welcoming us to your school.
