Students at Hutt Central School made a game about Responsibility. They sent the game to us.

Today we had a role model day. Inspiring people came in to talk to our students about the inspiring work that they do. Thank you to all of our guests.

Inspirational People Portraits

Our students have been writing biographies about people that inspire them. These people have used their power to influence positive change. Our students have created portraits to represent their inspirational person.

Island Bay School trial Lily and Matilda's game: Fox Invaders

As part of our Inquiry, we have been thinking about why people have rules. We begun by making our own games. Matilda and Lily made up a game called, "Fox Invaders." Students in Matai Hub at Island Bay School trailed their game.

Fox Invaders By Matilda and Lily

This is a made up game that as a lot of activity running and FUN!!! It's good for kids to learn about different predators and prey.

The ball is used for passing to your tea

Objective

The aim of the game is for the bunny team is to get the fox's tagged by the farmers without them getting caught and to save the bunny’s in jail without getting caught.The fox's aim is to get all the bunny’s in jail by tagging them or the fox catches the ball the bunnies meant to catch.

Players and Equipment:

This game is a 7-100 player game each team has to be even or it won't be much fun for the other teams,You will need a ball or 2, there is a time limit to do this and that is 15 mins.

Winning the game:

For the foxes to win the game they need to get as many bunnies in jail as possible and for the bunnies to win they need to get the farmers to tag as many foxes in the time

Rules:

• Stay in the boundaries
• Be honest when you get tagged
• Dont cheat
• Have fun

Our Review of Fox Invaders:

We liked:

• The game is fun and helps us to keep fit.

We are not clear about:

1. How do the bunnies get to jail? Bunnies get to jail by the foxes tagging them or the fox catching the ball the bunny is meant to catch
2. What does 7-100 mean? It means how many plays can play
3. What do the fox do when they get tagged? The go to the farmers jail until another fox saves them
4. Why do the farmers not go to jail? The farmers go to jail because bunnies and foxes can't hurt farmers
5. What are the balls for? The balls are for passing to your team.

About Schools’ Peace Week

The Peace Foundation New Zealand, started Schools' Peace Week in 2000, as our contribution to the United Nations Decade of the Child, to educate people of the consequences of nuclear war and to campaign for a world of nuclear weapons. The date of Schools’ Peace Week commemorates Hiroshima Day on 6 August, and Nagasaki Day on 9 August. The event has become increasingly popular in New Zealand and abroad each year and students are engaged in various activities, which promote peaceful practices in our schools and communities.  By making small changes we are able to empower people to create a safe world based on justice and human rights as well as to build a sustainable environment and peaceful relationships. This year Schools' Peace Week is being held from Monday 7th August to Friday 11th August. The theme for 2017 is “Nuclear Free”.

Here are some Quick Writes that we did after finding out what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki:

The only reason that the USA dropped the atomic bomb was because the Japanese refused to surrender. The people from the USA dropped the first bomb was when the Japanese first refused to surrender and the bomb was dropped Hiroshima and the emperor still refused to surrender and three days later another bomb was dropped in Nagasaki and the emperor finally surrendered. We learn from history! As you now it is peace week and today we are learning about atomic bombs. I feel sad that they did this and it was not a very nice thing they did. I would hate to be in their shoes. I wish I could of stopped it. why did they need to bomb that country, just because the emperor would not give up and surrender. By Isabel

During world war 2, 2 bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bomb that hit Hiroshima was called “little boy” and the bomb that hit Nagasaki was called “fat man”. Tens of thousands of people were killed by the bombs. The 2 bombs were dropped by America. The the bomb that hit Nagasaki was dropped on the 9th of Aug 1945 and the bomb that hit Hiroshima was dropped on the 6th of Aug 1945. The bombs were only dropped a few days apart. By Arabella

Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely?

We have been thinking about power and whether people who have complete power turn bad.  So far we have read The Emperor’s New Clothes, thinking about the characters in the story. Some of the comments from readers included:

-The Emperor loves himself!

-He is self obsessed!

-The Ministers are weak.  They don’t have the courage to speak the truth.

-Nobody wants to seem stupid by saying there is no fabric on the loom.

-The child who points out the Emperor has nothing on is the only really powerful character.

-The weavers are the most powerful.  They fool everybody!

-The weavers understand human nature; they know nobody wants to seem foolish.

Many of the students thought that the Emperor seemed to quite enjoy being naked!

We are about to begin a research project on this question and look at examples both for and against.

Build a Castle Challenge

Today we had a Base Group (Tribe) Castle Challenge. Tribes were asked to build a castle and make a flag. They had to work together as a base group without any teacher input. Tribes had to decide on roles and responsibilities. They also had to decide on a name for their tribe. 

Tribes were given a spaces in the school as territories and were given some materials that they could use. They would have to negotiate with other tribes to have the necessary materials to build a safe castle. 

At the end of the day, we played "Capture the Flag."

It will be interesting to hear the reflections of the tribes tomorrow and how they link this to our Inquiry: People Power.
