Hour of Code

Today we had an "Hour of Code" event. Schools across the world have signed up to be part of this event.

We met Bob the robot. We learnt how to code Bob using building blocks.

What a great and fun way to learn how to code.

Clean Our Ocean Scratch Interface Competition: Message from the ICT Student Council

Screen Shot 2017-05-22 at 2.27.08 pm.pngDEADLINE: End of Term 2

You need to make a game. The theme is ‘Clean Our Ocean’. The aim is to program the diver character to save the fish by collecting the rubbish.

What you need to do:

  1. You need to set up a Scratch account to compete in this competition. Ask an adult at home to help you set up an account.
  2. Download a template below and add it to your Scratch Account:

  1. Make a game

Now it’s up to you to determine exactly how it works. You have to code the parts to the game, for example:
  • You program the diver to move and collect the rubbish (it disappears when touched)
  • You program the rubbish to move and catch the fish (the fish disappeared when touched by rubbish)

4. Add some surprises and challenges to the playing of your game, like a title page and instructions, new elements and actions, or different levels.

Send finished entries to Nicola nstevenson@worserbay.school.nz

Win a Ranger Drone with HD Camera

And the challenge is not the only reward. The winning entry in each category will receive a Ranger Drone with HD Camera for their classroom.

Hour of Code: Star Wars Blocks

Today we took part in "The Hour of Code" We had to work together collaboratively to work through the different levels on the Star Wars course. We enjoyed the last level as we got to make our own world. Coding is getting easier for us as we have done it before.

Later in the day, we taught some Year 3 students how to code. It is great to be able to share our learning with others and teach them:

Coding Experts

Some children in Matariki and Mahutonga have been becoming coding experts so that they can teach others how to use Scratch.

They can:
Move the sprite up, down, left, right
Move the sprite using degrees
Add more sprites
Stop sprites from moving over the edge
Program sprites to talk to each other

... And much more!

Coding Craze

Today we did coding it was lots of fun. Coding is what makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps and websites.

We used Hour of Code to learn how coding works. You have to put blocks together so that objects on the screen move.

We will be learning how to use Scratch and make our own games.

Free One Hour Coding Workshops

IMG_1131.JPG

Hack Miramar and Wellington Makerspace Trust are teaming up to put on a series of free one hour workshops that give everyone the chance to learn an 'Hour of Code'. It's all happening from 10am on December 13th 2014
at Scots College in Wellington.

These sessions are suitable for ages 4 to 104, so don't just bring the kids, give it a go yourself. The sessions can cater for complete beginners through to the slightly more adventurous.

This event is being run here in Wellington as part of a global series of events put on by volunteers and educators around the world during "Computer Science Education Week". Participants will have the opportunity to take part in sessions that start each hour, learning some aspects of programming as well as electronics and general technology concepts in just 60 minutes.
