'Business Time!' - Market Day 2020

Promoting our wares in Tautoru prior to Market Day

Market Day 2020 was a roaring success, providing a host of wonderful learning opportunities and bringing our community out in force. Māhutonga Matariki are so grateful for the support shown to us and we invite you to watch this space as we decide how to do some good with the proceeds!

It all began with our inquiry, 'Business Time'. We heard from our friends Bobby of Reusabowl and Andy Campbell, getting great insight into what it means to be an inventor. We learned how to go through the Design Process, from blue sky thinking to prototyping and creating. Promotional skills came to the fore as Market Day neared - posters, slogans, advertisements and jingles. In Maths we practiced dealing with money and calculating profit. Read on below for some student perspective.

We started our Inquiry by going through the Design Process of an invention and looking at 'Thinkers Keys' to get our minds creative. We also made inventions, well when I say 'made' I mean thought of inventions to fix a big problem in the world - cats killing native birds.  When we finally started coming up with ideas for market day it was really easy, but funnelling it down to my top five was really hard. When I did finally 'funnel' them I didn’t pick what I thought would be the easiest or most fun, I picked them by what was the most sustainable and what was the most likely to get bought. All that work was actually for nothing because I ended up joining a group that already had an idea but I wasn’t that mad because it was a really fun idea - Cups (of lemonade, Cakes and Comics!

We had to identify a problem for little kids - but what? Little kids have lots of problems... they are always bored and need to learn to grow things. That's where we got the idea of Enviro Jar. When it came to getting absorbed I would give myself a 4 out of 5 as we would often lose track of time and do lots of work, then be amazed to discover it had only been half an hour. We had to think like inventors because we had to be original and also not too costly, especially because people had similar ideas and we still wanted to make a profit of some sort. This is why we partnered with another group doing something similar. I think our work was quality but that's not mine to judge, I'm just glad I did that inquiry and got such an opportunity.
- Greta L

Yesterday Market Day went really well and all of our products were sold. The cost for our product was $2.00 and our profit was $20. I bought a banana seal with a jersey, hat and a tutu/skirt, two jelly cube drinks (strawberry jelly and lemon jelly), a how to draw Homer Simpson book, a Harry Potter spell book with a wand, a cupcake and cookie, two little gardens and lots of other things!
- Aila B

We took a lot of time with our product, going through a complete Design Process, to make sure it was eco friendly. Also we thought about how it would be a reasonable price fair for us and others. Our group made exactly $51.10. We would have made around $66.10 but we needed to minus the costs. I am so proud of us, none of us were expecting so much. Next time I want a bit more time so we can make it better, but overall it was really fun, The design process, Making it & Selling it was AWESOME!

Goodnature Traps: Inspiration for our own Inventions

At the end of the last term we had Josh from Goodnature come in and talked to us about their traps and the process that they went through to get to the stage that they are at now.

When he was here, he told us all about how their trap works and what barriers they had to overcome.
As well as that he showed us a slide show of all the different prototypes and design ideas, to inspire us to come up with our own ideas, and questions.

After the presentation we got an email from Josh talking about how he thought we were really welcoming and how he had a blast!

Now we are coming up with our own design ideas and making our own prototype testing and improving.

Thanks Josh!

Trip to Massey University

The other week some kids from Matariki and Mahutonga went to Massey University to see what inventions they have been using to do their research. We went to different  labs. We discovered that people make their own 3D printers.

Trip to Cooking School

My Movie from Matariki on Vimeo.

We have been interested in innovations in food and cooking.

At the french cooking school Cordon Bleu we saw food sculptures made out of chocolate, sugar and other stuff. At the Cordon Bleu cooking school, we learnt that the teachers have the long hats and the students have the short hats. At Cordon Bleu we learnt where all the students cook and study. You are allowed to start the cooking school when you are sixteen but they recommend when you have finished university. By Zoe, Emma and Molly

Trip to Cancer Society: We have been planning our own trips that link with our own inquiries

At 9:00 on Wednesday morning 26th of November, Asha, Chanel, Gretel, Eloise, Frankie and Maya went on a inquiry trip to the ‘Cancer Society’ We asked some questions and we found out that the most common type of Cancer is Skin Cancer (In New Zealand). We got a photo with the staff members beside the Cancer society sign. We found out a lot while asking our questions:

Next we went to the Wellington hospital, we looked at the x-ray rooms, Chemotherapy room, operating room and the radio therapy room.

After that we went to the Hospice and made a gold coin donation, we talked about why people come here and when.

We got an ice-cream on the way back! (Yum)

SPCA Trip: We have been planning our own trips that link with our inquiries

SPCA Trip photo.JPG - We saw these puppies!
On Tuesday the 25th of November Josie, Betty, Meg and Danielle went to the SPCA! We saw puppies, kittens, cats, a goat and bunnies! We asked lots of questions like “Who inspired you to choose this job” or “What do you find challenging about your job” - we had to stay positive with our questions. We also needed to stay quiet so we didn’t spook the animals. Before we entered each enclosure we had to put on hand sanitiser. We had lots of fun and can’t wait to go again!

Design Trip at the University

Today me (Jude), Burton, Jack, Tom and Adam went to the University of Architecture and Design. It was really fun, we got to see big 3-D printers and funny chairs. We met up with a designer and senior lecturer Ross Stevens, he was funny and very intelligent.
The best parts of it was going into his room and seeing all his prints and also seeing the big printers in action.
The University  was really big and had lots of offices, it was a big red building on the top of Cuba street. It was very deep and the staircases went on forever, but we weren't allowed to go down because of the earthquake strengthening.
We all thought that it was very cool and we really liked it.
After that, we went to subway and had a good lunch, everyone said it was the best trip ever.
Another cool thing was seeing the students in action and watching all of the meetings live and in person.
Ross' workshop was so cool, it had a really cool chair that lit up when you sat on the tubes, all of his products were on his desk and he had all sorts of things like plastic bird heads, metal  tubes, mini houses, moulds and heavy battery things. But what caught our attention most was the big Wellington model on his wall all made from 3-D print, nearly every building in Wellington could be seen on it.
Comments:

It was amazing- Jude
It was good- Burton
The TVs were huge- Tom
It was amazing how many different materials they used to make things- Jack CC

Pikpok Games: We have been planning trips that link with our inquiry.

Hi Brett we loved the trip to Pikpok because I found out about Pikpok and what you do. I have started playing Giant Boulder of Death and Monster Blade and I've started creating a game on unity, it’s pretty hard but I think I will learn.
Pikpok is amazing how they have worked with Maze Runner and Adult Swim and more.

Thanks for showing us how you make games and apps with Unity.

I LOVED the trip, thanks for giving up your time for us to come look.

From Liam G

Gaming Trip

We left school just as I finished my explanation writing. We went in Jack R’s car. We went to a gaming place were they make video games. The company
is called Pikpok. We had to walk into the elevator then we had to walk through the library. We went out of the library then we walked across the road into the building. We went there because at school we got to choose our own inquiry about innovation and I chose to go to a gaming company called Pikpok. We learnt that at my age I can be a gaming tester and that is awesome!
