 We've been playing with metaphor! Inspired by Denis Glover's Wellington Harbour is a Laundry, we've re-imagined our city in all different ways. We discussed the difference between simile and metaphor. We wondered how we could extend the metaphor, taking it even further to help describe the unique qualities of Wellington.

Final blog post of 2020

Wow! What a year. We acknowledge our students and the community for demonstrating persistence and resilience (Grit) in the past year. We have so much to celebrate! Our students have continued to flourish, demonstrating all kinds of Character Strengths, humour being the one that has come to the fore most reliably across the board. The curiosity and creativity have also been evident and much of the work has been stunning.

We would like to wish our Year 6 graduates and other students leaving Worser Bay School all the best for their next learning adventure. We would also like to wish Madi all the best in her future endeavors.

Publishing Our Writing

In Māhutonga Matariki, our students have been publishing pieces of writing that they are proud of. This is the final stage of the "writing process." Students have been publishing these pieces to share with you as part of the Arts Celebration. 

It is really important that students have an authentic audience for their writing. This engages writers and gives them a purpose to write. When students have an audience, they learn that their ideas and opinions are interesting and meaningful to others. This is engaging and develops enthusiastic writers who want to edit and improve their work.

We are learning to see ourselves as writers with something interesting to say!

 

Collaborative Poetry- Tuakana Teina

Last week, our Social Positive Purpose Group worked collaboratively with the Year 3 students to create some poetry. The aim was to teach the juniors about the poetic devices that the seniors have been using in their poetry. It was great to collaborate and learn from each other!

The Wrap by William

Māhutonga Matariki performed the "Banana Dance' to the tune of "Tequila" and it was silly and crazy. We showed bravery, leadership and zest. We went through a few stages of practising it. First of all, we made up some dance moves that we might have been able to use. We realised that it was going to be rainy at the warp so we had to make our dances smaller to take up less space. We had to be in time with the music. As soon as one group finished, the next group immediately started.

The Year Sixes did an act of "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" It was an adaption of the story by Dr Seuss. They did this because they are graduating. They also did a movie that we shared at the last Year 6 assembly. It was very silly!

The teachers did a performance to the YMCA. They were very silly in their item, especially Mr Nik, John, Nicola, Carl, Maddie, Jude, Scott, Beth, James, Steph, Suz, Cat, Helen and Jenny (that is all of them). We wondered why John wanted to roller skate!? We were surprised that there wasn't a big accident.

Football Skills with Team Wellington

On Fridays we have been learning football skills with Team Wellington. We are very grateful to have this opportunity. 

Team Wellington are kindly sharing their knowledge and skills with us. It is a great opportunity for us to work with different people at school and build on our large ball skills at the same time.

Not knowing where he was, 

he soard happily right across the other side of the pitch 

and was smashed hard into the back of the net...hard.

Poems from Worser Bay Boating Club

Some of us chose to write poems today while working in the Boating Club. We wrote some of our poems from models that we have used over the week. We will display these poems in the Boat House! 

That was the Beach Shared writing by Kate, Katherine, Kirsty, Emelia, Nell, Isabel, Georgina and Eva Strolling down the beach one day I came across a crab I picked it up, it pinched me And now I am feeling sad To cheer me up I swam in sea I got stung by a jellyfish Poor dear me! So, I climbed upon the rocks A dolphin leaped out of the blue It splashed me, I fell in And now I am covered in seaweed goo!
