We will be holding our annual Cross Country event early in Term 2. Many of us are keen to improve our fitness and running. Lots of us talked about this at our goal setting meetings. We have started training for the event in our PE time. Today we did some hill training! Everyone gave it their best shot.
Gabrielle led a yoga session with all students in the senior area. We are keen to get all of our students trying new activities for "Wake up the Brain". What a great way to start the day!
Today we did a big walk from Worser Bay School to Tarakena Bay. On the Eastern walkway, we looked at the flora, the fauna and the landmarks. What a great way to explore and get ready for our Inquiry at the beginning of next year when we will be "Forest Protectors".
A big thank you to all of our parent (and grandparent) helpers!
As part of our Positive Education Programme, we like to take the time to say what we are grateful for.
Student Wellbeing Parent Workshop - Tuesday 22 August
Come along to our Student Wellbeing Parent Workshop is on Tuesday 22 August at 6.45pm in Tautoru.
Student wellbeing, or actually wellbeing in general, is being talked about, written about, thought about wherever we turn. Wanting our children to grow up resilient, adaptable, open to new experiences and feeling good and doing good has to be something we all want. It's not just a grab bag of feel good 'stuff' - there is a science behind this.
Eighteen months ago we introduced what is known as Positive Education. “Positive Education is the bringing together of the science of wellbeing with best-practice teaching to enable individuals to thrive.” We are looking forward to sharing a bit of background, the model we use and some of the outcomes we have had with you on the 22nd.
We will hear first hand from some children, get to experience some of the activities and a couple of our parents will also be linking this with life outside school. Plus, Board members will introduce you to our Online School Policy site 'Schooldocs', many of which link in some shape or form to student wellbeing.
I'm sure you will have plenty to contribute to the discussion. It's a great chance to chat about what you do at home already in this sphere and also learn from others. That's what a community is all about. Let's grow and work together to build a strong foundation where our children can flourish.
We aren’t making a choice between wellbeing or academic pursuits as there isn’t a choice to be made!

Hope to see you there. (Hope is actually a great predictor of wellbeing and performance!)
Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence Defined. Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman, the developers of the personal strengths classification, define the appreciation of beauty and goodness as “the ability to find, recognize, and take pleasure in the existence of goodness in the physical and social worlds.”
Today we had a focus on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. We worked across the school in Whanau groups.
Kyla (Solly's mum) worked with students to make Maro for Matariki.
We took photos of things that we think are beautiful from around the school. We made these into a collage. You can see this next week at our Arts Celebration. Please make sure that you visit all of the spaces in the school to look at all of the wonderful learning that we have been doing.
We also created a piece of found material art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. We also loved the opportunity to work with the artist Stan Chan.
