The Wrap 2020

 Yesterday at 'The Wrap' we performed Taku Manu for welcoming. Then Tika tonu for coming of age!

Year 6 students recited the poem "Spring Morning" by AA Milne.

Matariki Celebrations

Matariki on the Beach

Today we went down to the beach at 7:00 am to celebrate Matariki. When we were at the beach we gathered round the fire and SHOUTED our maori haka and sung a song. After we listened to some people talk to us about Matariki and the maori history.

After all that we walked up the very, very steep hill to get to school. Once we were at the top of the hill at we all ate our breakfast/ kai that we had packed (mostly everybody had croissants) in Tautoru or Mahutonga. Then we all split into our whanau groups and had a brilliant day.

Matariki Celebrations

This morning we went to the beach at 7:00 in the morning. We sang songs by a bonfire and did the haka. We were celebrating Matariki!

After that, John did a quick speech about Matariki, then we all had a walk up and down the beach to remember our ancestors that had passed away.

When we got to school, we went into our classrooms and shared breakfast with each other. Later…The bell rang. Anna said that we all had to go into Tautoru and listen to some speeches. John introduced some people that had come to talk about our ancestors like Kupe and talk about other things like the seven stars.

Dean & Xavier are some experts and knew a lot about Miramar. They told us about Kupe and how he followed the giant octopus whēke. They also talked about kupe climbing some rocks but damaged his penis. Everyone laughed. They told us about what their job is. Their job is to look at different places in New Zealand, which we imagine is pretty cool. They talked about different areas around here. We liked the idea of doing this as a job.

It was the best beach celebration that we had ever had.

Practicing the Hongi

We are working hard on our Haka and Waiata for the Powhiri.  The stamping feet are making the earth tremble and dust is sent up to the sky in clouds. Our voices can be heard ringing from the clifftops, drifting out above the waves.    

The Powhiri is a fantastic occasion, welcoming new whanau to our school.  It is a time where we come together, acknowledge the past and the stories of the people who have come before us.  For example did you know that this is the place where Ngai Tara, the first long term inhabitants of Te Whanganui a Tara, lived?  It is their Pa and we celebrate that fact.

It takes some time and a whole lot of energy to get it right but we are willing.  We are looking forward to meeting you all.

To the kids who are leading the Haka and Karanga, to the teachers and parents who are having a new experience we say: Kia Kaha, Kia Manawa Nui

Learning our new Haka

We have been practicing a new Haka, and will be sharing it on the morning of our Matariki Celebartion (Thursday 18th June).

The Haka is about explaining different things like how Kupe chased the Wheke (Octopus), the maunga-Tangi Te Keo, and Whetukairangi (Star gazers).

Some kids at school helped to write the Haka, it is very unique to us as it is about our place and who we are.

We are very proud that we can make up our own Haka and make our own actions.  We have been having so much fun learning the Haka.

Kia Ora Mark Bradley: Learning about Matariki

Mark Bradley came in to Mahutonga and Matariki and taught us about Matariki. We learnt some  new Te Reo Maori words associated with celebrating Matariki. We also started to learn a new Haka. This Haka is significant to us as some of us have been involved in the writing process. By Zoe

Maori Rotations

Today in Maori we had a choice of 4 different classes:

• Making Maori inspired stained "glass" windows
• Creating a Haka
• Contemporary Maori Dance
• Making Poi 

During these classes we focused on how Maori art, dance and language can inspire our learning.
