Tech Leaders - Positive Purpose

We are the Teach Leaders. We are helping to manage devices and are helping other students with computer skills. This is developing our Positive Purpose.

Within the model of positive education, positive purpose is defined as understanding, believing in and serving something greater than yourself and deliberately engaging in activities for the benefits of others.

This will help us:

- initiate contributing to others in the school community

- develop a sense of responsibility to the world and a commitment to helping others develop leadership

- organise and implement activities for other students

- develop agency with an increasing amount of self-direction

- develop communication skills.

This is us helping the students in Autahi to share their learning on Seesaw.

Positive Purpose Days

On Thursday and Friday we enjoyed Positive Purpose days. A big thank you to the Scots College students who came to help out!

Some of us ran workshops across the school
Thank you for the movie, Tui

Some of us moved bark and sand to make the playground a better place
Thank you for making the movie, Tui!

Working Hard Movie
Thank you, Lexi

Tommy: We had positive purpose days and the first day we had to move bark and more bark but luckily we had some year 10s to help us move the lots and lots and lots of bark and now the playgrounds looks amazing. We also did very fun computer ICT jobs I would like more positive purpose days and I would like to have more time doing the computer ICT.

Marcia: This week was really fun because on Thursday and Friday we got to do gardening with John and the other year 5s. We went over the fence to pull the things off so the plants that we were growing had good sunlight.

Chloe: This week my plus was working with Beth for the zine committee on the Positive Purpose days. I liked lifting sand in to the sand pit also working on the whare at lunch and working with the Autahi kids. Positive Purpose days was really interesting.

Ethan Q: I enjoyed doing the workshop with the juniors and teaching them how to make the algebra puzzles. I enjoyed moving the bark chips and pulling stuff out in the garden. I enjoyed being in the ICT group it was fun posting different things on Seesaw.

Zen: This week I like doing paper airplanes for the little kids because they seemed to fly like one hundred meters in the sky and the little kids liked it. I liked doing Positive Education.

Soma: My weekly goal was using positive purpose by helping little kids with learning, participating in groups, challenging myself and focusing on my report to try to get it done. My favourite part of the week was when my brother came to school and helped us move the bark chips to the playground and sand to the sandpit.

Scarlett: I showed positive purpose by helping moving bark and I helped in the garden and I did work shops with people that I have never worked with before. When we were moving the bark chips it was very heavy but I got it done.

Locky: I was involved in positive purpose this week like building the whare. We picked up bark all the way for big kids. We finished it off in 2 days. We helped in the garden for a long time. We got really dirty but that makes it good. We’re putting in hard work I love putting hard work.

Being a Digital Citizen

We have been discussing how to be a good Digital Citizen.

Our School Value is 'RESPECT'

We Respect

  • Ourselves
  • Each other
  • Environment

The same rules apply when we are online!

We respect ourselves online:
  • I make sure that there is an adult in the room when online
  • I report anything to an adult that makes me feel uncomfortable
  • I look after my body and mind
If we see anything that we are unsure about we calmly turn off the screen or close the laptop. This protects other children while we get the teacher.

If we are not sure whether what we are looking at is ok, we would ask ourselves:
"Would I be comfortable looking at this website with my parents/ my teacher?"
"Would I do this in my normal life?"

Too much screen time can affect our Positive Health. It can cause:
  • Headaches
  • Neck/shoulder/back pain
  • Eye strain, dry or irritated eyes
  • Reduced attention span
  • Irritability
This is why we LIMIT screen time.

Positive Health: These students are looking after themselves by looking after their bodies (their backs) while they work together online.

We limit the amount of screen time and spend lots of time moving around.

We respect each other online:
  • I use my online manners
  • I make comments in a positive and friendly way
  • I support others in their learning
How can you be considerate/ respectful to others when online? What would happen if it was okay to say mean things to other people? What would happen if we didn’t take turns talking, or if we were allowed to shout in class?

We respect the environment online:
  • I take turns when sharing technology
  • I treat all technologies with respect and care
  • I use technologies as a tool, not a toy!

We have systems for how we store devices.

Please continue this important conversation at home...

Our Acceptable Use of Technologies Agreement

Digital Citizenship runs through everything we do. We continuously come back to our Technology Agreement and break down what each part means. Our use of technology principles is to enhance learning, not substitute. It sits inside a whole child, fully balanced curriculum with Positive Education/ Wellbeing at the core.

NetSafe defines a Digital Citizen as someone who:
  • is a confident and capable user of ICT
  • uses technologies to participate in educational, cultural, and economic activities
  • uses and develops critical thinking skills in cyberspace
  • is literate in the language, symbols, and texts of digital technologies
  • is aware of ICT challenges and can manage them effectively
  • uses ICT to relate to others in positive, meaningful ways
  • demonstrates honesty and integrity and ethical behaviour in their use of ICT
  • respects the concepts of privacy and freedom of speech in a digital world
  • contributes and actively promotes the values of digital citizenship.
Positive Health: These students are looking after themselves by looking after their bodies (their backs) while they work together online. We limit the amount of screen time and spend lots of time moving around.

Positive Relationships: These students are working collaboratively to create.

Positive Purpose: Our students have been working hard to develop systems to keep the technology safe and charged.

Once Upon a Crime: Capital E

This week, we went to Capital E to make a movie. We all took on different roles to make this happen.

Molly:

My role for Capital E was the Assistant Weather Presenter. We got videoed and what we had to say would come up on camera one. This role was easier than others because we didn't have to remember anything. First we chose our costumes and then we would wait for our cue to go on. When Beauty and the Beast was just finishing, then the presenters will say their part. Next the camera will turn to us. Yasmin started reading and then she would hand it to me. I would read my part then I hand it to Yasmin again. At the end we said together "good day to you all and back to the studio with Nell and Orla."

Orla:

This week, we went to Capital E. We had different roles that we got assigned. I was one of the presenters. We had so many lines but luckily there was a autocue machine so we didn’t have to memorise them. We did 2 run throughs. We made it like it was on live TV so if we messed up we couldn’t stop and re-make the part. We had lots of fun. The people who began the scenes did such a good job at keeping the people in the show on track. They had lots of controls, headsets and lots more because they needed to stay in contact. Otherwise things would happen at the wrong time and place. We had so much fun and made a really cool movie.

#Watch this space- we will post the other 2 movies when we have permission to upload these to YouTube.

Student Council: ICT Group update

As part of the Information, Communication Technologies (ICT) Student Council group we have been brainstorming ways that we can help others to learn computer skills.

All of our students are involved in a student council group as it promotes a Positive Purpose. Not only does this have the benefit of helping others, but it is said to be one of the most therapeutic things we can do for ourselves. Mahatma Gandhi is quoted as saying, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

We have been teaching younger students how to use the Dash robot and also how to use the coding programme, Scratch. We have enjoyed sharing our expertise.

We have been talking about ways that we can become practitioners or experts so that we can help novices to with digital technologies. We have been working with buddies to learn more about Scratch.

Ollie and Finlay: We worked on scratch, we did four things. 1. If you press the B key it will become bigger, if you press the S key it becomes smaller, when it hears a sound it changes colour, if it is on the 25% of the screen it says I like it here. this is what we did for ICT.

James: I am trying to make a game that the sprite can move left to right and jump properly.

Jan: I learned how to use lists in scratch. I think I am nearly a expert in scratch because I nearly can code anything I want.

Angus: I learnt how to use multi colour and use controls as well as creating a pattern behind your character. I also learnt variables so you could get lots of money!!!

Tommy and Hunter R: We made our sprite colourful and get bigger and smaller.

Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship runs through all that we do. We have revisited some of these ideas with the Technologies Student Council Group who will be helping to run some sessions next week.

Made with Padlet

Students at Worser Bay School co-constructed this technologies agreement. We have all taken it home, discussed with parents and signed it. It is important that we revisit this often and continue to discuss...

WBS Acceptable Use of Technologies 2018

My School Values:

  • Respect ourselves
  • Respect each other
  • Respect the environment

The same values apply when I am online and when using the school’s technologies.

Some ways in which I can show what this looks like when using school technologies include:

  • Respect ourselves

·       I make sure that there is an adult in the room when online
·       I report anything to an adult that makes me feel uncomfortable
·       I look after my body and mind

  • Respect each other

·       I make comments in a positive, friendly way
·       I use manners
·       I support others in their learning

  • Respect the environment

·       I take turns when sharing technology
·       I treat all technologies with respect and care
·       I use technology as a learning tool, not as a toy

I have read and understood this and I have shared with my parents

Minecraft Eco-House Competition Winner... Alex G!

Some of our students entered a Minecraft Competition run by Interface. All of our entries were awesome and thank you to the ICT student council for organising this at Worser Bay School.

And the winner of the Primary (Year 1-6) is... Alex G!

See: Minecraft Marvels on Interface

This is a movie of the winning Eco House:

My house is a hay bail house and it's also a small house.
This is my house I have solar panels, wheat farm, windmill, clay floors and a vege garden.
It is a hay bail house because it insulates my house the hay has come from ground.
I have designed this house so the windows are facing the sun meaning I dont need my lights on all the time and the house stays warm. (solar gain)
I have clay floors because it is a natural material and if there was a sunny day and a cold night it would make the house warmer because it sucks in the heat and then it pushes the heat into the house.
The rain comes off the roof and then it gets caught and then it gets used for water in the house.
The house is orientated towards the sun and it uses the energy to heat the house.
My solar panels are on the roof and they use the energy of the sun to charge the panels and this gives me power to use my lights and to heat my water.
I also have a fire to heat my home and to also help heat my water and use sticks and wood from my tree plantation.
My wheat and vege garden help produce food to eat and to feed to my animals so I can get more of them.
My windmill will also generate power for my house.
I have used timber on my house from my tree plantation.
I have a stone wall that will keep the heat in.
I have glass walls so that the heat from the sun comes in to heat the house.

Hour of Code 2017

The ICT Student Council Group have been helping teachers to organise the "Hour of Code" event this year. They have been trialling the "Gumball Play Lab" so that we can become experts and teach others.

Students in Matariki and Mahutonga have new login details that they have already received or will receive shortly.

During Computer Science Education Week, tens of millions of students will gather all around the world to participate in the annual Hour of Code.
