Skyping with Auroa School

Yesterday, we Skyped our friends at Auroa School in South Taranaki. We talked about the year and what we have been doing recently. They have been doing athletics and lots of other work. They have something called Harold the giraffe http://www.lifeeducation.org.nz/ . They are learning about a Growth Mindset and we are too. They have had a good start to the year and we are looking forward to Skyping with them more and learning together.

Growth Mindset Writing: Collaboration with Auroa Primary School

At Worser Bay School we have a big focus on Growth Mindset. We have talked about trying new things and challenging ourselves to step out of our comfort zone and grow our minds! 

The concept of a Growth Mindset was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck. She says that “In a Growth Mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment,”

This year we will be challenging ourselves by taking the #growyourmindchallenge 

Our students started the year by writing about something that challenged them in the holidays. We shared our writing with our friends at Auroa School and they have written their own Growth Mindset pieces, using our writing as models. 

The additional bonus was that because our students had an audience for their writing they were especially keen to do a good job!

Forest Protectors- What if there was no pest control in NZ?

Today we begun our new Inquiry- Forest Protectors! As a tuning in activity we did 4 rotations. One of the rotations was a provocation- what if there was no pest control in New Zealand?

Bob the Sheepdog

This is the story of Bob the Sheepdog. This time, we wrote the build up to the story. Jan, Alastair and Peter took the lead with this.

Transition

In our Transition Groups (now new base groups for 2018) students were given a Maths problem. They had to problem solve in teams. It was so exciting! Some of us acted it out and some of us drew the answer.

Parents were also invited to hang out in the spaces. It was great to have the opportunity to show them around.

Dave the Chicken: Travelling Tales

This is a Travelling Tale named "Dave the Chicken" created by 5 schools from around the world. This was made by students from schools in Bahrain, USA, Columbia and New Zealand.  

Students from the senior area at Worser Bay School created the beginning of the story. 

This was the beginning of the story written by Alastair: Once there was a chicken called Dave. Dave liked bread and silver beat. Dave lived in a farm with 700 other chickens. There owner was fat and liked staying in bed and eating chocolates. One day Percy the cow accidentally stood on Rosie the crow. And the farmer threw a news paper at her.

Catch up with Room 3 at Auroa School

Orla: Today we skyped Auroa School. We talked about our learning. They were talking about how they got to choose their own learning around the STEM subjects. Some of them chose trapping and some grew bacteria from Mr Webb's phone.

Hana: We talked about our Inquiry. They had a camera that they put in the bushes so they can see the pests. They 3D printed platforms to put cat biscuits or peanut butter to attract the animals. Here are some of the images that they have captured.

Peter: The kids at Auroa School played the game that me and Ollie made up. They said that it was a bit like piggy in the middle. The aim of the game is to not let the person in the middle catch it. It was exciting that they played our game.

Maths Collaboration

We are excited about connecting Maths groups from Raroa Intermediate and Worser Bay. Here are our introductions...

Hi, Our names are Alxis, Shaine, Briana and Jaylee. We are from Raroa Intermediate. We love maths and we are looking forward to sharing maths strategies with you! Hi Raroa, Our names are Kaia, Elliot, Alex, Bethen, Hayley and Janne. What is your school like? Our school is on top of a big hill were a Maori marae was! we also have a really nice view. What do you like most about maths? Kaia likes it all but her favourite is multiplication! Bethen likes multiplication and measurement. Elliot likes geometry, measuring and making geometry cities. Janne likes 3-D shapes, Area and perimeter. Alex likes everything but her favourites are multiplication and geometry. Hayley likes using place value and Area and perimeter. We love maths and we are looking forward to sharing some of our maths strategies with you! We can’t wait to see what you guys send to us!

Collaborative Art in Learning Groups

Today we found out who is in our new learning groups. We had a challenge to create a collaborative piece of artwork unpacking the learner attribute of "I am Connected."

We have been getting familiar with the Collaboration Matrix and using this to reflect on our group work.
