Social Positive Purpose Group

Positive Purpose Groups: We are brainstorming ways to contribute to others in the school community. Doing things for others is purposeful and meaningful and benefits our own psychological and physical health. Please chat with us at home to generate more ideas. We want this to be the term of action!

Please add ideas to our Padlet:

Social Positive Purpose Group

We are the Social Positive Purpose Group. We are showing manaakitanga by helping others. We take action by helping each other in our school, our local community and the wider community.

In our groups, we have been generating ideas that will help others.
We want to develop the Harry Potter club. We will include everyone that would like to join. We are brainstorming ideas.

We would like to teach others how to wash hands properly. This will stop people getting sick from allergies and viruses.

We are running a Friday club with the junior students. We are teaching them to play a game called Pikmon. We will meet at the big kid's playground.

Made with Padlet

Last year, we made a movie to say that "bullying is not welcome at our school". This year, we are keen to make a "put your rubbish in the bin" movie.

This is us brainstorming our ideas:

Building Positive Relationships

Manaakitanga is a principle we embrace in the Māhutonga Matariki Whānau. This is about caring for others, uplifting them, supporting them and making them feel at home!

We are learning to celebrate difference

Life would be very boring if we were all the same. Celebrating difference is exciting and makes life interesting!

This is us at karakia. We are getting awards for being connected. We are all so different!

We are learning to listen to each other

We actively listen to the person speaking. We may need to turn our body so that we are facing the speaker. This helps the speaker to feel valued and supported.

We are actively listening to each other!

We are learning to give our time to others

When we give our time to others it enhances our Positive Relationships. We are learning to be present in the moment. Spending time building relationships is a valuable life skill. One way that we give time to others is in our Positive Purpose Student Council Groups.

We are practising our Positive Purpose, planting as part of the Enviro Group.
We are learning to develop our conversations

We are developing our communication skills through conversations. We take turns, build on each other's ideas and keep focused on the question.

We are learning to give and receive feedback

Giving and receiving feedback is really important in learning. It can help us to gain a different perspective.

We are giving and receiving feedback in the helping circle
We are learning about empathy

Empathy and understanding builds connections between people. Every relationship can teach us something!

Building relationships with people helps us to become more connected!

Digital Technologies Positive Purpose Group

We are the Digital Technologies Positive Purpose Group (Student Council). It has been going well so far. We have helped in Tautoru a bit already. We have also helped in Autahi a few times too. Yesterday we helped Tautoru with a Hour of Code (it is a website to help students to learn about coding) and we worked through the Minecraft game. We helped them to understand how it works. This gives us a Positive Purpose because we can help people with stuff that they don’t know about yet.

Stay Safe! Stay in Control!

Information posted by "Family Zone"

Messages for students:
There are some great people on the internet posting some amazing stuff, but sometimes there are nasty people who post things that try and scare and upset us. We’re all lucky in that we are in control of what we look at and what we don’t. So if you ever see something that seems strange, upsets you or asks you to do something you think is not ok, turn it off and talk to a trusted adult about it.

Our ICT Student Council group made a movie to inform others what to do if you see something that is not ok online.

Students in the ICT Student Council group will be helping students in Tautoru and Autahi to learn how to use technology. Digital Citizenship will continue to run through everything that we do.

We helped Tautoru students to get started with their Google Apps accounts.

Incredible weather for Student Council

What a stunning day we had of Student Council today!

ENVIRO GROUP: Today we did some weeding down the bank, watered many of the plants - including our own thriving vegetable garden and used the resources the Bush Builders team from the Zoo gave us. It was a beautiful afternoon out in the sun!

PALS: We had such a great time leading games over the last 2 weeks for anyone to join in at lunch time that we decided we would organise some more! However, this time, we wanted to make them all active. Today at Student Council, we all invented our own sports games in groups. All of the games were unique and creative, using a wide range of different sports gears for different and interesting purposes! We tested them out with each other so that they are ready for next week.

Each day different groups of PALS will be playing their games from 1.10pm when the music goes on. Make sure your there!

ICT GROUP: The ICT group are working on projects and making workshops to help others with technology and ICT.

Library Group: The students below are helping to sort books.

Library Student Council

We have been learning how the books in the library are organised. We talked about how fiction books are organised by the last name of the author and got into a line that showed the order books we write would be put in. Lots of us have last names that start with S so we explored what would happen next, Sm (Smith) was before So (Sorsa).

Then we explored the Dewey Decimal System. We chose something we wanted to explore and took a guess what it was about then went and saw if we could find a book about that.

"Today we learned about the Dewey decimal system which is a system used in libraries to organise non-fiction books. The books are organised in numbers. We were interested in which categories animals were placed in and we guessed 500 and we guessed right 599.7."

Student Council: ICT Group update

As part of the Information, Communication Technologies (ICT) Student Council group we have been brainstorming ways that we can help others to learn computer skills.

All of our students are involved in a student council group as it promotes a Positive Purpose. Not only does this have the benefit of helping others, but it is said to be one of the most therapeutic things we can do for ourselves. Mahatma Gandhi is quoted as saying, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

We have been teaching younger students how to use the Dash robot and also how to use the coding programme, Scratch. We have enjoyed sharing our expertise.

We have been talking about ways that we can become practitioners or experts so that we can help novices to with digital technologies. We have been working with buddies to learn more about Scratch.

Ollie and Finlay: We worked on scratch, we did four things. 1. If you press the B key it will become bigger, if you press the S key it becomes smaller, when it hears a sound it changes colour, if it is on the 25% of the screen it says I like it here. this is what we did for ICT.

James: I am trying to make a game that the sprite can move left to right and jump properly.

Jan: I learned how to use lists in scratch. I think I am nearly a expert in scratch because I nearly can code anything I want.

Angus: I learnt how to use multi colour and use controls as well as creating a pattern behind your character. I also learnt variables so you could get lots of money!!!

Tommy and Hunter R: We made our sprite colourful and get bigger and smaller.
