Swim Sports 2023

Swim Sports was hard work!

Marlon: ‘Ready, set , clap!’ John’s hands slammed together. I jumped off the side and dived into the pool! I kicked and gracefully swung my arms around in circles. It was the 50m freestyle race. The size of the pool was 25m long so we had to do 2 laps. 1 lap done 1 do go. ‘Slosh’ the sound of water leaking into my goggles shocked me! I shut my right eye and kept swimming. When I got to the end of my first lap I stopped for a second and fixed my goggles. Nearing the end I saw someone getting close to finishing. I speeded as fast as I could and just overtook him to become 3 place!

Fabian: I was getting into the spray pool and Ethan was counting to 20 all of us swam off and played tag. We were playing tag for about half an hour and then we had to go to swim sports. Some of my friends went to the competitive races. There were freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. I didn’t do competitive but I did do the fun races they were freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, dolphin diving,  mermaids, stingray, doggy paddle...

Leo M: “Ready, set, clap” I dived in I was kicking like my life depended on it, my heart was pounding, my head was aching I was almost done the first lap, but I was tired I just gave it my all. I was very tired from freestyle. I didn't stop. I was 4th in the 50 metre.

Ethan Q: Swimming sports was fun, I sat on the bench and watched the 50 m races then it was our turn. John clapped and we were off. I dived into the pool we swam super fast I did my normal 3 strokes and breath but when I got closer to the end I breathed every 2 arms. I reached the end and I was super happy.

Gigi: Swim sports was super duper fun because we got to do different things like breaststroke, backstroke, dolphin dive, free style, stingray and wheelbarrow. Stingray was a bit hard so I had to turn up my bravery and perseverance. It was hard but I made it to the end.

Miniball: Eastern Zones

Rézi: Miniball was really fun and tiring. The first school my team versed was Seatoun A, and the second was Miramar central or St Patricks. We lost to Seatoun 4 - 12 or something close to that. It was still really fun though! We lost the other two as well, but when we played against Kilbernie school wich was kind of close but in the end they won. We had another match against a different Kilbernie team, wich was really close at the start. At one point it was 3 - 4 us losing and we felt a big burst of hope. We gave it our all, and it paid off. We didn’t win that either but it was a really good game. Super fun!

Jasper: It was Thursday 22nd of June, the miniball tournament. We were sweating before the game.
First up: Seatoun : 16-4 (to them) it was a bad loss but we kept going on 4 games later. We kept smiling!
2. 8-4
3.10-4
4.17-7
5.21-6
Then we all slumped down into the car then I remembered something. Today it was Thursday, our miniball practise!

Marlon: “Beep,” the timer started. Game on! The referee chucked the ball in the air. Zen Jumped but the other team already had the ball! We had coloured wristbands and so did the other team. We could only mark the player on the other team with the same wristband as us. I had the colour yellow. One of my friends in the other team was the one that had the yellow band. A person from the team came running up with the ball with a teammate on his trail. “Clank,” the ball flew into the hoop, over and over. “Clank,” we scored. The yellow wristband dude came running up. I jumped to try and stop the ball, but It went flying over my head. “5,4,3!” Monty chucked the ball but it missed short! “2,1!” The game was over.

Marigold: What makes good sportsmanship? Good sportsmanship is when you work as a team, pass to everyone and show kindness to your team and the other team too. If the other team wins don't be a sore loser, say good job to the other team and says thank you to the couch and ref . it is to be inclusive.

Monty: What makes good sportsmanship is showing leadership, saying good game at the end of the game, and being a role model.

Akau Tangi

It was great to get back to Akau Tangi for a day of sports. We used a Growth Mindset by trying new things and getting stuck in. Trying new sports is beneficial for our bodies and minds! When you learn new things, your brain grows. When you process a positive experience it enhances Positive Emotions too!

Thank you to Lext for putting this movie trailer together:

Worser Bay Cross Country

We were all so proud of all of our students who ran the Worser Bay Cross Country. Lots of Perseverance, Resilience and Grit. Students set goals and experienced positive Accomplishment.

Rézi: The year fours jogged down onto the beach, eager to start the race. I was watching from on top of the grass. ‘Go!’ shouted John as they set off running at full speed. I started to cheer, as they had just run past me and their first place, ran through the funnel winning the race. My stomach suddenly burst into butterflies as John called us down to the beach to line up, and start the race. ‘Ready, set….. Go!’ shouted John as I quickly thought over my plan. I was going to try jog at the start, and when everybody would be tired, I could try to sprint to the end. It backfired though because at the start I actually realised it wouldn’t work cause everybody sprinted and I knew I would end up last if I tried my plan, so I tried sprinting as well. BAD IDEA. I was exhausted by the time I got halfway through the 2nd lap, and from there I felt blood or something like that in my mouth, and my heart felt like it was going to burst. I overtook my friend, but then she overtook me and thats how it went for a little while. We finally arrived at the funnel, and in the end my friend was in front of me and as I crossed the finish, I counted what place I came and I was sixth girl in year five!

Jack: I was on the starting line “321 go!” I was off! we had to run to the big rock at the end of the beach and around a cone then run to the sand dunes. up and over I went. I was so excited I was in first place. I went for loads of high fives as I was going past. I was still in first. I was at least 5 meters away from the finish. My friend was catching up but I kept the lead yay! I came in first place. Next was the year 5's after that was done, I went to congratulate the winner…

Archie: YAAAAY!!! That was the sound of the year 4’s finishing their race. Next up was the year 5’s…I went over to congratulate the winner. Then we had to wait for the other year 4's to finish. The year 5 race is to the big rock at the end of the beach, and then start going back. When you get to the halfway point, you go up a pathway in the dune, then across the grass, then you do the same thing again.
“Can all the year 5’s come over here now?” yelled John.
This was it. This was the moment I had been waiting for!
“Okay” said John, “line up on the starting line! On your marks, Get set, GO!
We were off! I was about fourth to last, but that was only because technically everyone was sprinting, well I was just setting a reasonably fast pace. We were nearly at the rock, (Jeffery). I sped around the cone next to Jeffrey in third place, (so far). Then we raced up the dunes, and sped across the grass. Then suddenly…We were on our second lap! We jogged down to Jeffery, and then I was in first place. We sped up the dune, (for the second time) raced across the grass (for the second time), then we were on the last stretch! Me and my friend were neck and neck, Then for the last 10 metres, gave it my best... I sprinted and won the race in first place!

Marcia: “Go!!!” John shouted. I ran as fast as I could then I paced myself, getting ready for the end….
Half way there I shout in my mind as I dodge the rocks racing towards me. I finally make it to Jeffry (The rock) then I run round the cone and turn back running closer and closer to the sand dunes. I get up the sand dunes onto the grass and down back on the sand. Yes! I’m on my 2nd lap but just as I get halfway, spit gets stuck in my throat I try to cough it out but I couldn't do it so I had to stop and walk the next few metres. I didn't get it out but I felt better. When I got back onto the grass, I knew I had to keep going then I made back onto the sand and once I did my friend sprinted and went all out. I did the same, but I did not go as fast as he did and then I made it to the end and I came 4TH GIRL IN YEAR 5!

Amelia: Cross country was really fun. On your marks, go! and we were off. "Come on Amelia, you can do it, run like the wind. Go Amelia." I said to myself "remember your goal. Go, go, go." I had just gone around the cone at the end of the beach. My friend passed me.
"Come on, you can do this. Go, go, go." Screamed Nicola. My friend passed me. I sank back to 3. Boom! I was in 2nd again. We were  side by side. Everybody was rooting for us. I had just finished lap 1. In the end, I got second.

Ākau Tangi Visit - Year 5 and 6

Last Monday, we went to Ākau Tangi sports centre. We did cricket, gymnastics and handball.

We played a non-stop version of cricket and before that to warm up we played a game where you had to grab the ball first, then we did high catches where you have to catch the ball first.

For gymnastics we warmed up by doing shapes then we went off and did stuff on the equipment.

In handball we warmed up by playing ball tag, then we did some passing and catching drills. After that we played a game of numbers.

WBS Cross Country

Isabella:
Cross Country

Year 1’s, do a half lap.
Year 2’s, do the same.
Year 3’s, do one full lap.
Year 4’s, do one full lap.
Year 5’s, do two whole laps.
Year 6’s, do two and a half laps.

If you do a whole lap you would run to Annie.
And if you did a half lap you would run to Chloe.

Year 4’s were late so the order got muddled up.
So it was year 1’s, year 2’s, year 3’s, year 6’s, 5’s, 4’s and that was the order of the year groups.

John would line year group by year group “Ready, steady, GO” he would say, and then we where on the run.

Leo K:
When the Cross Country was happening, I was really nervous. When the person said "Year 5 boys you needed to run on the hard sand because it was easier to run." Last year I did not get on the hard sand but needed to go on the soft sand. This year I gave it all I've got and needed to run to the end of the beach and back 2 times. The good news is that I came 4th place! I am really happy and felt Positive Accomplishment and I made it to the Eastern Zones. After I ran, we cheered the other people on.

Fabian:
When the run started I was very nervous but a little excited. I was getting more nervous when I saw the little kids run. When the race started I was a little scared but when the race was finished I used a lot of Grit and bravery and I persevered a lot.

Locky:
The Whistle blows. I ran with everyone, at first I was scared I wouldn't make it in the top five. I was in 8th at the time. Heaps of people were in front of me. I was running so much we were all in a group running we made it to the rock we ran. I sprinted as hard as I could towards the hill. I was going quite slow because of the sand under my feet. I ran when I got to the other side of the hill. Somebody ran in front of me. Then we were almost at the finish line, when the person in front went the wrong way. I knew that was my moment to run! I ran super fast, he was right behind me. I was at the finish line, I ran as fast as possible. I needed to dial up perseverance because it was hard. I got there and fell over from how tired I was.

Lisa:
I walked in a line onto the start.
“Okay you have to run around Jeffrey the rock up the path along the grass and back to here. Do that two times and half a lap, which is where you just go up the path and on the grass and to the finish” John bellowed.
Ready set GO.
me and 6 other year 6 girls sped off the start line. I was in 4th, but when we got to Jeffrey there was water sloshing up to the rock so we couldn’t run around it. Annie made a line we had to cross. I was coming in first place.
All of us were running in pairs, me and Olive were having a nice chat  year 6s had to do 2 laps and a half lap.
When we came up onto the path lots of people were there cheering us on on the grass and at the finish line.
I had to dial up perseverance and zest!

Finn H:
Cross Country was awesome!
It was SO cool because I. Got. Into. The EASTERN ZONES!!!!😃😃
At the start I stayed just behind the people in the front (because I was just jogging), then they got tired out once we were about half-way across the beach because they had used all their energy. People started to drop back like flies! I had to use Perseverance to keep going. At the end I felt good, tired and a stitch. But it was worth it!

Gigi:
Cross country is when you do a big run. I’m going to say what had happened when I did Cross Country. I was pretty nervous. It was a long run. I was going barefoot because we were at the beach. It was a cold day and that was a good thing so I would not get too hot. When it was time for the Year 5 boys to run everyone started running full speed and I got 9th place so it good. I had to use lots of Grit because I didn't want to give up. I wanted to keep going without stopping. I felt really proud of myself when I finished.

Scarlett:
We were getting ready to run.
Year 1,2,3,6,5,4 it was a crazy day!
When it was the year 4s turn my heart was racing so fast like a plane.

Olive:
My heart was thumping in my chest like crazy, as I stepped onto the starting line. The wet sand crunched under my feet and the cold breeze whipped across my face.
The sky was grey and the sea was icy and dark.
“Listen up!” Yelled John. “You’ve gotta run from here to jeffery, cut up the path past the changing sheds, along the grass and back here, Do that twice and then do a half lap, just up the path and along the grass again.”
“Right, On your marks, get set, GO!” Hollered John.
Seven girls sprinted off the starting line, then I remembered mum’s words. “Don’t sprint at the start, jog. Make it feel like a big long trail run.”
I slowed down, so did Lisa. One by one the girls dropped back, we took the lead.
Up ahead, I saw Annie in a bright yellow vest waving us to jeffery. I touched the line she had drawn in the sand and took off again. “GO YOU GUYS!” Yelled Lucy as we passed her.
As I moved onto my second lap, my breath began to sound raspy. I kept on going.
The parent’s and the other kids cheered me on as I shifted into the half lap. The sand felt soft under my feet as I ran up the path. The grass soaked my shoes as I ran on the grass.
“GO OLIVE! GO LISA!” Everybody was screaming.
I felt my heart race as I raced into top speed. The crowd cheered wildly as I crossed the finish line. I was overcome with Positive Accomplishment!

EZ Netball

On Wednesday 18 of May the Worser Bay School Netball Team (Worser Bay Stars) went to the ASB centre for Eastern Zones Netball. We played 5 games each 18 minutes long. We got two ties, two losses and one win. We really had to use our Team Work, Leadership and Bravery to get through it. It was very fun to play netball all day even though it was hard, we had lots of fun in between the games too! Our team would like to say a big thanks to Kristy our coach and Margie our manager.

Positive Health and Fitness

We have been working on our Positive Health by trying to improve our fitness.

We know that exercise is good for us and that we need to make it fun, so we're doing a range of activities!

This term we will be tracking our fitness by recording data. We will be regularly doing push ups, tricep dips, planks, leg raises and burpees. We want to improve the amount of exercises that we can do in a minute. We also want to improve our technique.

We have also done the beep test. We will see if our scores improve later in the term.

We are looking forward to the Worser Bay Cross Country on Tuesday. We know that we will need to show 'Grit' to do the best that we can!

Regular exercise has lots of health benefits for ākonga, such as:
  • improving fitness
  • providing an opportunity build and enhance Positive Relationships
  • increasing concentration

Getting into the Great Outdoors!

We had a fantastic couple of days in the great outdoors at the end of last week. We were getting out and exploring the peninsula. Ākonga presented their Magic Places to each other and in the process, learnt about some of the history and special features of the area. We did a solid amount of walking which was challenging for some; all part of our focus this year of building Grit!

On Thursday, we went around the Seatoun Peninsular, Oruaiti Reserve and over the Eastern Walkway to Tarakena Bay.

On Friday, we headed North, via Centennial Reserve and onward to Massey Memorial.

Worser Bay Can for Cancer Fun Run 2021

Today we ran the Fun Run in memory of those that had or have cancer and to raise money for the Cancer Society. We also did it to celebrate the inquiry, Healthy Body, Healthy Mind? I have a page on the Worser Bay Can For Cancer site and one of the posts that I did was if you donated $5 to my page, I will carry my bag the whole way. And that went really well! I am really proud of myself for running up the zig-zag with my bag on because it is really, really hard! I dialed up the strength perseverance, zest and bravery because the run was wet and windy. Wellington at it’s best! The beach was so wet and windy that I was struggling to keep upright. (Actually, that is not entirely true, I could walk quite well but I could not run.) The water was spraying everywhere and my t-shirt was wet to the high heavens!
-Amelia G

When I started I knew it would be very hard because we had to run up the zig zag and it was very steep. It was very cute when I ran past the Autahi kids because they were all shouting my name as I ran by. I am very grateful for all the people that donated to me. It will help a lot of people when they are experiencing the worst time of their life.
-Eddie B

I am proud of how I ran all that way and did it for the memory of my grandmother and my aunt who survived cancer during lockdown. I think I did a very good job as well as all the other kids and my friends, I was grateful to have Autahi kids to give us water and Tautoru kids who can cheer us on.
-Aila B
The Fun Run was Phenomenal. It was so fun. We started under a gazebo on the beach, and looped up the zigzag, along through school, and back down the hill. It was the first time I actually ran up most of the zigzag, let alone most of the way. When I got to school I took a cup from one of the Autahians who was offering water and poured it over my face. When I got to the beach I rolled around in the sand and maybe spilt a bit of the sunscreen I had. I tried to climb up Spiney Norman the rock, but, well, I got a bit of a ... Scar ... on my arm. Ow. Anyway. I estimated that I came in the top 30. And I got a cookbook. Anyway. Good times. It was probably the best run I've ever been on, and I think the cancer society need the money! Thank you to all of my donors. I did it for my Grandpa who died of liver cancer, and I want to say well done to everyone else who pushed themselves to the limit, took time to get their costume, and gave it a good effort.
-Will J

Our teacher, Kath, passed from cancer and I’m happy and proud to raise money for such a good cause. Maybe we can help prevent other losses from cancer with the money we’ve raised.
-Mae S
It was fun but exhausting. The weather wasn’t the best but it was worth it. When we were running through the school the Autahians were handing us water. Then Eli pointed to where we were running. The final stretch across the beach wasn’t too bad. The water gave us all a boost to get to the finish line!
-Charlie D

I ran to help the cancer society and tried my best, knowing that I was helping others, and when I finished, I felt GREAT! I loved running past others, cheering them on and giving them high fives, red in the face and wheezing. Everyone tried SUPER hard and I’m really proud of what we have achieved. It was so cool running past others in crazy costumes.
-Cleo S
I went really well. I came the first year 4 girl. I felt proud of that. I feel like I am getting fitter. When I got to the finish line, I saw Cleo cheering me. I dialed up bravery and perseverance. I thought I was going to be last! I picked the bluest things I could find in my closet.
-Cara D

He tino pai tō tātou mahi. Great work everyone!
