Cross Country

We have been training for our school Cross Country event, trying to raise our speed and levels of fitness in preparation for the big event. We have set personal goals, emphasising the aim of pushing and extending ourselves over competition with others. We are already seeing some great results with increased levels of fitness across the board and some really enthusiastic runners. We will be at Worser Bay Beach at about 9:30 on Wednesday the 15th. The event usually involves a quick dash up and down the beach, through the dunes, across the grass and back to the start/finish. Please come to support our amazing runners if you are able to. Those who are particularly keen may qualify for the Eastern Zone Event to be held at Scots College on the 22nd of May. More information about this event will follow when we know who is in our Cross Country team.

Worser Bay Cross Country

We were all so proud of all of our students who ran the Worser Bay Cross Country. Lots of Perseverance, Resilience and Grit. Students set goals and experienced positive Accomplishment.

Rézi: The year fours jogged down onto the beach, eager to start the race. I was watching from on top of the grass. ‘Go!’ shouted John as they set off running at full speed. I started to cheer, as they had just run past me and their first place, ran through the funnel winning the race. My stomach suddenly burst into butterflies as John called us down to the beach to line up, and start the race. ‘Ready, set….. Go!’ shouted John as I quickly thought over my plan. I was going to try jog at the start, and when everybody would be tired, I could try to sprint to the end. It backfired though because at the start I actually realised it wouldn’t work cause everybody sprinted and I knew I would end up last if I tried my plan, so I tried sprinting as well. BAD IDEA. I was exhausted by the time I got halfway through the 2nd lap, and from there I felt blood or something like that in my mouth, and my heart felt like it was going to burst. I overtook my friend, but then she overtook me and thats how it went for a little while. We finally arrived at the funnel, and in the end my friend was in front of me and as I crossed the finish, I counted what place I came and I was sixth girl in year five!

Jack: I was on the starting line “321 go!” I was off! we had to run to the big rock at the end of the beach and around a cone then run to the sand dunes. up and over I went. I was so excited I was in first place. I went for loads of high fives as I was going past. I was still in first. I was at least 5 meters away from the finish. My friend was catching up but I kept the lead yay! I came in first place. Next was the year 5's after that was done, I went to congratulate the winner…

Archie: YAAAAY!!! That was the sound of the year 4’s finishing their race. Next up was the year 5’s…I went over to congratulate the winner. Then we had to wait for the other year 4's to finish. The year 5 race is to the big rock at the end of the beach, and then start going back. When you get to the halfway point, you go up a pathway in the dune, then across the grass, then you do the same thing again.
“Can all the year 5’s come over here now?” yelled John.
This was it. This was the moment I had been waiting for!
“Okay” said John, “line up on the starting line! On your marks, Get set, GO!
We were off! I was about fourth to last, but that was only because technically everyone was sprinting, well I was just setting a reasonably fast pace. We were nearly at the rock, (Jeffery). I sped around the cone next to Jeffrey in third place, (so far). Then we raced up the dunes, and sped across the grass. Then suddenly…We were on our second lap! We jogged down to Jeffery, and then I was in first place. We sped up the dune, (for the second time) raced across the grass (for the second time), then we were on the last stretch! Me and my friend were neck and neck, Then for the last 10 metres, gave it my best... I sprinted and won the race in first place!

Marcia: “Go!!!” John shouted. I ran as fast as I could then I paced myself, getting ready for the end….
Half way there I shout in my mind as I dodge the rocks racing towards me. I finally make it to Jeffry (The rock) then I run round the cone and turn back running closer and closer to the sand dunes. I get up the sand dunes onto the grass and down back on the sand. Yes! I’m on my 2nd lap but just as I get halfway, spit gets stuck in my throat I try to cough it out but I couldn't do it so I had to stop and walk the next few metres. I didn't get it out but I felt better. When I got back onto the grass, I knew I had to keep going then I made back onto the sand and once I did my friend sprinted and went all out. I did the same, but I did not go as fast as he did and then I made it to the end and I came 4TH GIRL IN YEAR 5!

Amelia: Cross country was really fun. On your marks, go! and we were off. "Come on Amelia, you can do it, run like the wind. Go Amelia." I said to myself "remember your goal. Go, go, go." I had just gone around the cone at the end of the beach. My friend passed me.
"Come on, you can do this. Go, go, go." Screamed Nicola. My friend passed me. I sank back to 3. Boom! I was in 2nd again. We were  side by side. Everybody was rooting for us. I had just finished lap 1. In the end, I got second.

WBS Cross Country

Isabella:
Cross Country

Year 1’s, do a half lap.
Year 2’s, do the same.
Year 3’s, do one full lap.
Year 4’s, do one full lap.
Year 5’s, do two whole laps.
Year 6’s, do two and a half laps.

If you do a whole lap you would run to Annie.
And if you did a half lap you would run to Chloe.

Year 4’s were late so the order got muddled up.
So it was year 1’s, year 2’s, year 3’s, year 6’s, 5’s, 4’s and that was the order of the year groups.

John would line year group by year group “Ready, steady, GO” he would say, and then we where on the run.

Leo K:
When the Cross Country was happening, I was really nervous. When the person said "Year 5 boys you needed to run on the hard sand because it was easier to run." Last year I did not get on the hard sand but needed to go on the soft sand. This year I gave it all I've got and needed to run to the end of the beach and back 2 times. The good news is that I came 4th place! I am really happy and felt Positive Accomplishment and I made it to the Eastern Zones. After I ran, we cheered the other people on.

Fabian:
When the run started I was very nervous but a little excited. I was getting more nervous when I saw the little kids run. When the race started I was a little scared but when the race was finished I used a lot of Grit and bravery and I persevered a lot.

Locky:
The Whistle blows. I ran with everyone, at first I was scared I wouldn't make it in the top five. I was in 8th at the time. Heaps of people were in front of me. I was running so much we were all in a group running we made it to the rock we ran. I sprinted as hard as I could towards the hill. I was going quite slow because of the sand under my feet. I ran when I got to the other side of the hill. Somebody ran in front of me. Then we were almost at the finish line, when the person in front went the wrong way. I knew that was my moment to run! I ran super fast, he was right behind me. I was at the finish line, I ran as fast as possible. I needed to dial up perseverance because it was hard. I got there and fell over from how tired I was.

Lisa:
I walked in a line onto the start.
“Okay you have to run around Jeffrey the rock up the path along the grass and back to here. Do that two times and half a lap, which is where you just go up the path and on the grass and to the finish” John bellowed.
Ready set GO.
me and 6 other year 6 girls sped off the start line. I was in 4th, but when we got to Jeffrey there was water sloshing up to the rock so we couldn’t run around it. Annie made a line we had to cross. I was coming in first place.
All of us were running in pairs, me and Olive were having a nice chat  year 6s had to do 2 laps and a half lap.
When we came up onto the path lots of people were there cheering us on on the grass and at the finish line.
I had to dial up perseverance and zest!

Finn H:
Cross Country was awesome!
It was SO cool because I. Got. Into. The EASTERN ZONES!!!!😃😃
At the start I stayed just behind the people in the front (because I was just jogging), then they got tired out once we were about half-way across the beach because they had used all their energy. People started to drop back like flies! I had to use Perseverance to keep going. At the end I felt good, tired and a stitch. But it was worth it!

Gigi:
Cross country is when you do a big run. I’m going to say what had happened when I did Cross Country. I was pretty nervous. It was a long run. I was going barefoot because we were at the beach. It was a cold day and that was a good thing so I would not get too hot. When it was time for the Year 5 boys to run everyone started running full speed and I got 9th place so it good. I had to use lots of Grit because I didn't want to give up. I wanted to keep going without stopping. I felt really proud of myself when I finished.

Scarlett:
We were getting ready to run.
Year 1,2,3,6,5,4 it was a crazy day!
When it was the year 4s turn my heart was racing so fast like a plane.

Olive:
My heart was thumping in my chest like crazy, as I stepped onto the starting line. The wet sand crunched under my feet and the cold breeze whipped across my face.
The sky was grey and the sea was icy and dark.
“Listen up!” Yelled John. “You’ve gotta run from here to jeffery, cut up the path past the changing sheds, along the grass and back here, Do that twice and then do a half lap, just up the path and along the grass again.”
“Right, On your marks, get set, GO!” Hollered John.
Seven girls sprinted off the starting line, then I remembered mum’s words. “Don’t sprint at the start, jog. Make it feel like a big long trail run.”
I slowed down, so did Lisa. One by one the girls dropped back, we took the lead.
Up ahead, I saw Annie in a bright yellow vest waving us to jeffery. I touched the line she had drawn in the sand and took off again. “GO YOU GUYS!” Yelled Lucy as we passed her.
As I moved onto my second lap, my breath began to sound raspy. I kept on going.
The parent’s and the other kids cheered me on as I shifted into the half lap. The sand felt soft under my feet as I ran up the path. The grass soaked my shoes as I ran on the grass.
“GO OLIVE! GO LISA!” Everybody was screaming.
I felt my heart race as I raced into top speed. The crowd cheered wildly as I crossed the finish line. I was overcome with Positive Accomplishment!

Interzones XC

"We did interzones! It was muddy. One of us lost our shoes in the bog and ran in just her socks. We worked hard."

Congratulations to these students for representing Worser Bay School at the Interzones Cross Country event. We are all very proud of you. What an amazing effort.

Eastern Zones Cross Country 2021

Year 5 Girls

We arrived at the Scot’s field. Everyone wanted to eat but it was too bad for the year fours because...

World war 2 all over again, trampling all over each, a fight to get to the front. But before we tell that story...

First the year fours got called up to get warmed up for the race. My heart raced even though my race wasn’t for another hour. “Ready” said the man.

“GO!!” he shouted.

Year 4 Boys line up

Our race was at Scots College. They have this amazingly massive green field of grass and I love it because there is some shade, lots of sun , some hills but mostly flat. We had to run three times around it and plus a little more because we had to get to the finish line which was not the same as the start line but a little further on. But I am glad that it was longer because some of the people in front of me were walking by the end and so I passed them but I wound not have if it was a little shorter because I passed them at the end.

Perseverance: I used perseverance when I kept going even though I was really really really tired and I felt like my throat was more dry than a sun dried lizard.

Bravery: I think that I used bravery even by just going to the event and I think that I also used bravery when I actually ran my hardest and did not walk. If I had walked I would probably not have felt so good about myself in the end. It was kind of scary because they said that if you walked then you would have to pull out and quit from the race because it would waste their time!

Cross Country 2021

Our goal last week was to show Grit. This connects with our bigger goal to ‘raise the bar’. We are learning that it is through our hard work that we succeed. We had to show this at our Worser Bay XC and we challenged ourselves and did our best. We are nurturing our Positive Health.

"The Positive Health domain focuses on supporting students and staff to develop sustainable habits for optimal physical and psychological health. With the inextricable link between physical and psychological health, we know that practising mindfulness and resilience techniques will promote greater health outcomes. Mindfulness and resilience are also supported by the quest to help students to develop broader healthy behaviours in terms of exercise, nutrition, and sleep."

Yoichi: I think cross country was good because it encouraged me to push my limits and pushes me to raise the bar. When I was running I almost gave up on my second lap but then my friends cheered and said I could do it, so I naturally ran to the finish line.

Eddie: A star for me was doing Cross Country, I showed grit when I was going to Jeffery (the rock), the wind was in your face when you were heading to it.

Olive: I pushed it to the limits in cross country, I raised the bar when I was close to the finish and I was really tired. I ran really fast and at the end I could barely breathe.

Mae: A star for me was Cross Country because I made it into Eastern Zones, but it was also fun having that feeling of Positive Accomplishment after you finish it.

Rani: Cross Country was a star for me because I got 2nd place. I am thankful to my friends because they pushed me to my limits and they made sure that I had a reason to do my best.

Eastern Zones Cross Country

Eastern Zones Reflection by Pyrenees

The Eastern Zones course for year fives was three laps of the Scots College field. As we began to run I realised that I had a stitch. During the second lap someone came in front of me and then I went in front of them then we were next to each other. Near the end of the third lap the person in front of me started to slow down so I took this chance to run in front of them so I came 10th. I used perseverance.

Eastern Zones Cross Country (EZCC) by Angus

The starter gun fired and we all started to run. We were bunched up and at the beginning no one could over take each other because there was always a whole group of people in front of us. Then we got to a hill area and a gap opened up in the line. I ran as hard as I could, and managed to get through the gap and move into 17th place. Some kids tried to run past me, but whenever that happened I ran faster and overtook about 5 people. Next there were some bumps in the grass (mini hills, basically) that we had to run over. Then there was a straight area about 30 metres long, and then that was a lap. Loads of people were yelling and cheering as I ran past them as fast as I could. My heart started pounding in my chest, and my legs started getting weary after the second lap. Sweat ran down my neck and my arms pumped through the air. I was in 11th place by then. My sprint slowed down to a jog and 3 people overtook me. My chest started hurting as I ran up a hill, and then my head started hurting. I got up into the bumpy hills area, and by then I felt like I was gonna throw up. I kept jogging until the very end, when 1 more person overtook me and I started sprinting as fast as my tired legs could carry me, but the person going got through into the finish, ending with me in 15th place. I had to use a lot of bravery in the race and afterward I felt proud and sick...

Eastern zones reflection by Zoe
We had to do three laps around the field. The gun went and we started running. I was in the top ten but then I fell back. In both of the first laps I managed to go past at least ten people, but this girl in front of me I just couldn’t get in front of her. On the last lap and last moment I used all my speed and caught up to her. And I came 25 out of more then 40! I used perseverance, zest, and courage to be able to compete in Eastern zones. I was feeling pretty nervous but also extremely exciting.

Positive Accomplishment through Cross Country

Last Wednesday our students ran our annual Cross Country on Worser Bay Beach. Positive Accomplishment focuses on enabling individual growth through achieving meaningful outcomes.

Students have been striving for goals. Achieving these goals has been highly rewarding. Our students have been embracing the Cross Country challenge with grit and determination.

Sophie: This week my goal was to try my best at Cross Country, and I achieved this goal. The character strength I used was Perseverance as I had to keep running.

Ella: My cross country goal was to try my best. I did try my best.

Nela: I showed good sportsmanship and paced myself so I did achieve my goals.

Solly: The Character Strengths I used was Bravery and Perseverance in Cross Country. I needed to use my Growth Mindset because I needed to change some of my tactics to move to a higher place. My goals went quite well because I did what I wanted to.

Nell: My goal was to try my hardest in cross country. I tried my hardest and completed it, not dragging behind. I had to walk some of it but tried to run and jog most. I almost gave up on the last half but I kept going and I made it! I am really proud. I loved clapping people on.

Octavia: I achieved my goal. My goal was to not stop and walk at any point in the race. I had to use Perseverance because I really wanted to stop and walk but I didn’t.

Rhosyn: I did use my Growth Mindset in Cross Country this week. I persevered and I am proud of myself!

Archie: I used the character strength of bravery because I kind of didn't want to do it. I felt happy at the end. I felt like I did a good job.

Talia: My goal was to persevere and support other people in cross country. I did good and I persevered and supported a lot of people. I persevered a lot while I was running and tried not to give up even though I was in a lot of pain.

Beatrix: I am grateful to have ran the course.

Evie: At Cross Country I achieved my goal by using my Growth Mindset and not giving up. The Character Strength that I used was Perseverance because I keep going. Cross Country was fun but also hard because about two times I got a stitch. I liked it because me and Cleo ran together. As soon as me and Cleo came up to the grass we heard everybody shouting "Go Evie and Cleo!" Everyone was so encouraging. As soon as I passed the end my throat was cracking. I ran up and grabbed my water bottle. "Good job" my mum said to me. She also gave me a big hug and then me and my friends made a city out of sand.

Chris: I did well in Cross County. I think I did well on my goals. I kept on going. I tried my hardest.

Will: I used Perseverance, Bravery, Zest, Growth Mindset, and a bit of Prudence and Humility. I came about 21st, 20th, 19th, 18th, or 17th. We went around the rock (Jeffery/Bob/Spiny Norman) then through the dunes and on to the grass and back through the grass and onto the sand, back up the dunes and onto the grass then back through the grass and onto the sand and finish where we started.

Pippa: I did achieve my goal by pacing myself so I wouldn't get tired 😴 and I am so proud of myself for not racing against anyone but myself I used Perseverance and Zest.

Anastasiya: Cross Country was great but hard. I really enjoyed it, especially the part were I helped Autahi. I think I have achieved my goals and I am looking forward to the next Cross Country.

Cross Country - May 8th 2019

Cross Country 2019

Our annual Cross Country event is to be held on Wednesday 8th May at Worser Bay Beach. All students will participate in the event, from the newest new entrant to the wizened old Year 6s. The starter’s pistol will fire its first shot soon after 9:30 am. The runners with the shortest legs will be underway!

The course for the younger students is not too demanding: one lap along the beach, up the track to the changing sheds and back along the grass to the finish. The rest do progressively longer circuits.

The emphasis for this part of the day is on participation. It is also for our kids to set a goal for themselves and to run as much and as well as they can. In the name of collaboration, we have been thinking about what we can do to support others. Some students have chosen to run alongside a buddy so that they can cheer each other on. Nice idea!

If the weather is extreme (probably not too hot), we will postpone the event. A call will be made early in the morning, date to be confirmed.

We have started building our stamina and strengthening our muscles for the race and will continue our training from the start of Term 2.

We hope to see you there with your cheering gear on.
