We were all so proud of all of our students who ran the Worser Bay Cross Country. Lots of Perseverance, Resilience and Grit. Students set goals and experienced positive Accomplishment.
Rézi: The year fours jogged down onto the beach, eager to start the race. I was watching from on top of the grass. ‘Go!’ shouted John as they set off running at full speed. I started to cheer, as they had just run past me and their first place, ran through the funnel winning the race. My stomach suddenly burst into butterflies as John called us down to the beach to line up, and start the race. ‘Ready, set….. Go!’ shouted John as I quickly thought over my plan. I was going to try jog at the start, and when everybody would be tired, I could try to sprint to the end. It backfired though because at the start I actually realised it wouldn’t work cause everybody sprinted and I knew I would end up last if I tried my plan, so I tried sprinting as well. BAD IDEA. I was exhausted by the time I got halfway through the 2nd lap, and from there I felt blood or something like that in my mouth, and my heart felt like it was going to burst. I overtook my friend, but then she overtook me and thats how it went for a little while. We finally arrived at the funnel, and in the end my friend was in front of me and as I crossed the finish, I counted what place I came and I was sixth girl in year five!
Jack: I was on the starting line “321 go!” I was off! we had to run to the big rock at the end of the beach and around a cone then run to the sand dunes. up and over I went. I was so excited I was in first place. I went for loads of high fives as I was going past. I was still in first. I was at least 5 meters away from the finish. My friend was catching up but I kept the lead yay! I came in first place. Next was the year 5's after that was done, I went to congratulate the winner…
Archie: YAAAAY!!! That was the sound of the year 4’s finishing their race. Next up was the year 5’s…I went over to congratulate the winner. Then we had to wait for the other year 4's to finish. The year 5 race is to the big rock at the end of the beach, and then start going back. When you get to the halfway point, you go up a pathway in the dune, then across the grass, then you do the same thing again. “Can all the year 5’s come over here now?” yelled John. This was it. This was the moment I had been waiting for! “Okay” said John, “line up on the starting line! On your marks, Get set, GO! We were off! I was about fourth to last, but that was only because technically everyone was sprinting, well I was just setting a reasonably fast pace. We were nearly at the rock, (Jeffery). I sped around the cone next to Jeffrey in third place, (so far). Then we raced up the dunes, and sped across the grass. Then suddenly…We were on our second lap! We jogged down to Jeffery, and then I was in first place. We sped up the dune, (for the second time) raced across the grass (for the second time), then we were on the last stretch! Me and my friend were neck and neck, Then for the last 10 metres, gave it my best... I sprinted and won the race in first place!
Marcia: “Go!!!” John shouted. I ran as fast as I could then I paced myself, getting ready for the end…. Half way there I shout in my mind as I dodge the rocks racing towards me. I finally make it to Jeffry (The rock) then I run round the cone and turn back running closer and closer to the sand dunes. I get up the sand dunes onto the grass and down back on the sand. Yes! I’m on my 2nd lap but just as I get halfway, spit gets stuck in my throat I try to cough it out but I couldn't do it so I had to stop and walk the next few metres. I didn't get it out but I felt better. When I got back onto the grass, I knew I had to keep going then I made back onto the sand and once I did my friend sprinted and went all out. I did the same, but I did not go as fast as he did and then I made it to the end and I came 4TH GIRL IN YEAR 5!
Amelia: Cross country was really fun. On your marks, go! and we were off. "Come on Amelia, you can do it, run like the wind. Go Amelia." I said to myself "remember your goal. Go, go, go." I had just gone around the cone at the end of the beach. My friend passed me.
"Come on, you can do this. Go, go, go." Screamed Nicola. My friend passed me. I sank back to 3. Boom! I was in 2nd again. We were side by side. Everybody was rooting for us. I had just finished lap 1. In the end, I got second.
Last Thursday we celebrated our “Food, Glorious Food” Inquiry with a Food Festival.
Thank you to all of the whānau for your help and support. Our students have been learning about different foods and how to pickle, salt, smoke and cook. We’ve made everything from baking bread, sauerkraut, pickled vegetables to ginger and orange syrup. These were all available for students to have a taste.
It was wonderful to see foods from different cultures and family recipes. It encouraged some great discussion!
Today we ran the Fun Run in memory of those that had or have cancer and to raise money for the Cancer Society. We also did it to celebrate the inquiry, Healthy Body, Healthy Mind? I have a page on the Worser Bay Can For Cancer site and one of the posts that I did was if you donated $5 to my page, I will carry my bag the whole way. And that went really well! I am really proud of myself for running up the zig-zag with my bag on because it is really, really hard! I dialed up the strength perseverance, zest and bravery because the run was wet and windy. Wellington at it’s best! The beach was so wet and windy that I was struggling to keep upright. (Actually, that is not entirely true, I could walk quite well but I could not run.) The water was spraying everywhere and my t-shirt was wet to the high heavens!

When I started I knew it would be very hard because we had to run up the zig zag and it was very steep. It was very cute when I ran past the Autahi kids because they were all shouting my name as I ran by. I am very grateful for all the people that donated to me. It will help a lot of people when they are experiencing the worst time of their life.
-Eddie B
I am proud of how I ran all that way and did it for the memory of my grandmother and my aunt who survived cancer during lockdown. I think I did a very good job as well as all the other kids and my friends, I was grateful to have Autahi kids to give us water and Tautoru kids who can cheer us on.
-Aila B
The Fun Run was Phenomenal. It was so fun. We started under a gazebo on the beach, and looped up the zigzag, along through school, and back down the hill. It was the first time I actually ran up most of the zigzag, let alone most of the way. When I got to school I took a cup from one of the Autahians who was offering water and poured it over my face. When I got to the beach I rolled around in the sand and maybe spilt a bit of the sunscreen I had. I tried to climb up Spiney Norman the rock, but, well, I got a bit of a ... Scar ... on my arm. Ow. Anyway. I estimated that I came in the top 30. And I got a cookbook. Anyway. Good times. It was probably the best run I've ever been on, and I think the cancer society need the money! Thank you to all of my donors. I did it for my Grandpa who died of liver cancer, and I want to say well done to everyone else who pushed themselves to the limit, took time to get their costume, and gave it a good effort.

Our teacher, Kath, passed from cancer and I’m happy and proud to raise money for such a good cause. Maybe we can help prevent other losses from cancer with the money we’ve raised.
-Mae S
It was fun but exhausting. The weather wasn’t the best but it was worth it. When we were running through the school the Autahians were handing us water. Then Eli pointed to where we were running. The final stretch across the beach wasn’t too bad. The water gave us all a boost to get to the finish line!
-Charlie D
I ran to help the cancer society and tried my best, knowing that I was helping others, and when I finished, I felt GREAT! I loved running past others, cheering them on and giving them high fives, red in the face and wheezing. Everyone tried SUPER hard and I’m really proud of what we have achieved. It was so cool running past others in crazy costumes.
-Cleo S
I went really well. I came the first year 4 girl. I felt proud of that. I feel like I am getting fitter. When I got to the finish line, I saw Cleo cheering me. I dialed up bravery and perseverance. I thought I was going to be last! I picked the bluest things I could find in my closet. -Cara D
He tino pai tō tātou mahi. Great work everyone!
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou mō tautoko ki tēnei kaupapa. Ka mau te wehi! Thanks to everyone for your support of this fundraiser.
We have cleaned out the old worm farm on top court! We cleaned it out and put in some new bedding making it all cosy and ready for some new residents in (thanks Christine for providing some of her wormy friends).
The start or the project!
We found a family of snails on the bottom
All cleaned out
Preparing the bedding block
Christine's worms in their new home!
We found out lot's of fun facts while setting us our new 'cute' friends. For example, it's really important you don't touch worms because the chemicals in our skin can 'burn' them! We are eager to educate our peers about this to make sure we can all get along and manage food waste together.
Thanks Billy for creating this DOs and DON'Ts, a copy of these are in each of the spaces.
Our friends will soon be settled in enough to start feeding them. This will be another thing we can show leadership in, while using the worm 'tea' and 'poo' in our beautiful gardens.
We arrived at the Scot’s field. Everyone wanted to eat but it was too bad for the year fours because...
World war 2 all over again, trampling all over each, a fight to get to the front. But before we tell that story...
First the year fours got called up to get warmed up for the race. My heart raced even though my race wasn’t for another hour. “Ready” said the man.
“GO!!” he shouted.

Our race was at Scots College. They have this amazingly massive green field of grass and I love it because there is some shade, lots of sun , some hills but mostly flat. We had to run three times around it and plus a little more because we had to get to the finish line which was not the same as the start line but a little further on. But I am glad that it was longer because some of the people in front of me were walking by the end and so I passed them but I wound not have if it was a little shorter because I passed them at the end.

Perseverance: I used perseverance when I kept going even though I was really really really tired and I felt like my throat was more dry than a sun dried lizard.
Bravery: I think that I used bravery even by just going to the event and I think that I also used bravery when I actually ran my hardest and did not walk. If I had walked I would probably not have felt so good about myself in the end. It was kind of scary because they said that if you walked then you would have to pull out and quit from the race because it would waste their time!
