Being a Digital Citizen

We have been discussing how to be a good Digital Citizen. 

Our School Value is 'RESPECT'

We Respect

• Ourselves
• Each other
• Environment

The same rules apply when we are online!

We respect ourselves online:

• I make sure that there is an adult in the room when online
• I report anything to an adult that makes me feel uncomfortable
• I look after my body and mind

If we see anything that we are unsure about we calmly turn off the screen or close the laptop. This protects other children while we get the teacher. 

If we are not sure whether what we are looking at is ok, we would ask ourselves: 

"Would I be comfortable looking at this website with my parents/ my teacher?"

"Would I do this in my normal life?"

Too much screen time can affect our Positive Health. It can cause:

• Headaches
• Neck/shoulder/back pain
• Eye strain, dry or irritated eyes
• Reduced attention span
• Irritability

This is why we LIMIT screen time. 

Positive Health: These students are looking after themselves by looking after their bodies (their backs) while they work together online.

We limit the amount of screen time and spend lots of time moving around. 

We respect each other online:

• I use my online manners
• I make comments in a positive and friendly way
• I support others in their learning

How can you be considerate/ respectful to others when online? What would happen if it was okay to say mean things to other people? What would happen if we didn’t take turns talking, or if we were allowed to shout in class?

We respect the environment online:

• I take turns when sharing technology
• I treat all technologies with respect and care
• I use technologies as a tool, not a toy!

We have systems for how we store devices.

I am a Thinker: Using Digital Technology

We know how important it is to come back to Digital Citizenship. Staying safe online runs through all that we do. We have been exploring our online behaviour. We have asked ourselves would I be comfortable looking at this website with my parents/ teacher? Also would I do this in my normal life?  

We thought about our school value of respect and unpacked what this would  look like when we are online. 

Our Learner Attribute focus this term is "I am a thinker." We have been thinking about thinking as we have discussed our value. We have also worked hard to make our thinking visible.

Messages for students:
There are some great people on the internet posting some amazing stuff, but sometimes there are nasty people who post things that try and scare and upset us. We’re all lucky in that we are in control of what we look at and what we don’t. So if you ever see something that seems strange, upsets you or asks you to do something you think is not ok, turn it off and talk to a trusted adult about it.

Our ICT Student Council group made a movie to inform others what to do if you see something that is not ok online. 

Students in the ICT Student Council group will be helping students in Tautoru and Autahi to learn how to use technology. Digital Citizenship will continue to run through everything that we do. 

We helped Tautoru students to get started with their Google Apps accounts. 

Acceptable Use of Technologies Agreement and Staying Safe Online

We have been coming back to our Acceptable Use of Technologies Agreement. A major focus that underlies everything is digital citizenship. Students have taken home the WBS Acceptable Use of Technologies in the past, this was developed by students and teachers. Safety is paramount and we take this very seriously. 

The use of technology is a tool to help us to meet our strategic goals of educating for the future, providing rich and powerful learning opportunities and connecting learners.

Our Digital Technologies Student Council Group have been making movies to share with others about the technologies agreement and the importance of our school value: Respect.

Mitchell: Technology and how to use it

When we use technology we need to stay safe online. Our main rules when we are on a chromebook is to show respect/ manaakitanga to others online, show respect to yourself online and respect the environment online. By showing respect online we need to listen to the teacher and do what they say we can do online. If there is not an adult in the room then we have to stay off of a computer or iPad. We also need to respect the iPad or computer that we are using and if it needs charge you need to take it to the charging station or safe and be responsible for putting it on charge at the station or safe.

Nell: 

Never tell anyone except your parents or other family members you trust your password. Remember that if you put something on the internet or YouTube it stays there forever. Your device is your own responsibility and if it gets broken or damaged it isn’t somebody else’s fault because you have to look after it and keep it safe the whole time. Don’t change your background or font in learning or school time. Always know where your device is and make sure you have a case or some sort of protection. Remember that your teacher can see your history and can disable your account.

Finlay: Technology 

I will respect iPads and chromebooks and the other stuff in the school. I will stay on task and not go on a different things on my chromebook like looking at random pictures online. I will not send emails while I’m meant to be learning. I will not use Add-ons on my documents like magic rainbow unicorns. I will not spend lots of time changing fonts I don’t normally use. I will only go onto school related things that I'm meant to do. I will on watch youtube and other websites only If I’m at home. I will only send positive emails to people.
