The Food Festival

Last Thursday we celebrated our “Food, Glorious Food” Inquiry with a Food Festival.

Thank you to all of the whānau for your help and support. Our students have been learning about different foods and how to pickle, salt, smoke and cook. We’ve made everything from baking bread, sauerkraut, pickled vegetables to ginger and orange syrup. These were all available for students to have a taste.

It was wonderful to see foods from different cultures and family recipes. It encouraged some great discussion!

The History of Food: How cultural developments over time have changed the food we eat and how we process it.

As part of our new Inquiry we have been exploring the history of food, how the way human development has changed what, and how we eat.

Timeline of our first thoughts around human development and food.

Although we have just started work on this, here are some of the things we found out.

The Paleolithic era, a time of the hunter gatherers saw early hominids eating what they collected; fruit, berries, roots, fungi, grains and occasionally meat including small reptiles and insects. The main form of processing food was cooking using fire. Evidence suggests this began about 2.5 million years ago. As well as this some foods may have been preserved by fermenting, possibly burying it; drying or salting.

                Timeline after some research.

About 10, 000 years ago the Neolithic era saw people begin to farm. They ceased to roam looking for food but cultivated crops (Horticulture) and began to keep animals (Pastoralism).

We are going to keep exploring the technologies involved with processing and preparing foods including fermenting, salting and making cheese to preserve milk.

We are going to learn more about how food is processed and prepared and then we want to have a celebration of food in which we bring and share food connected to us. Keep an eye out for details.

The World is My Audience #5 TWIMA5: What are you cooking?

The Global Cookbook!  #twima5 has been published!

The idea was... "what did you and your students cook up in the classroom last year?  The project is a global cookbook.  Let the world know what you are cooked up in the classroom."

You can read the book on itunes:

Yeast, Baking Soda, Baking Powder!

Yeast, Baking Powder and Baking Soda

What is making the balloons blow up?

We have begun investigating the extraordinary everyday ingredients which we use in the kitchen for their scientific properties.  Good cooks and bakers need to understand the nature of the products which they use in order to control the outcome of their cooking.  We are aiming to conduct research and experiment with all kinds of ingredients over the next couple of weeks so that we can be creative cooks and make our own recipes and food products.

Of course food and in particular eating it is a popular past-time.  We are all pretty fired up and can’t wait to get to it!
So, what is causing the balloons to blow up?

Pizza Making

Pizza Making from Nicola Stevenson on Vimeo. Movie by Rory and Angelina

Pizza

"Oh yuck" I said as I kneaded the dough, it was squishy through my fingers. Then we put the ingredients on the pizza. We put on sun dried tomatos, some pineapple, cheese, ham and black olives. Then we put it in the oven.

John  told us to come back in an hour and 10 minutes, but he didn't tell us why…

When an hour and 10 minutes had passed, Suz came and got us. John was already there. I sniffed the delicious smell of the pizza coming out of the oven. Suz asked us to go outside and after 1 minute she  came out holding the pizza in her hands. She laid it on my lap me and Janne ate like princesses. In seconds, we had finished it.
