Healthy Body, Healthy Mind?

Worser Bay Athletics- Friday 29th October

This term we will have a big focus on Positive Health. Our Inquiry is called, "Healthy Body, Healthy Mind?"

Our Inquiry will involve the Science of the cardiovascular system, healthy eating and learning about the importance of sleep and, of course, being active. We will be keeping a Health Journal, collecting personal data, goals, etc. We hope also that this intersects with some Positive Purpose, doing good for others and giving back in some way. Our students will be leading what this will look like.

The Institute of Positive Education, Geelong Grammar School says that "Health is a cornerstone of a holistic model of positive education. Within the model, health is defined as practising sustainable habits for optimal physical and psychological health that are developed from a sound knowledge base. Evident by this definition is the notion that health consists of multiple components and that complete health is achieved when a person is physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally well." We are using the “SPIRE” acronym to help us to set goals.

Spiritual Well-being: Leading a meaningful and moral life and living mindfully, while contributing to the greater good.

Physical Well-being: Cultivating a healthy body through exercise, nutrition, and adequate rest and recovery.

Intellectual Well-being: Acquiring knowledge, engaging in rigorous scholarship, cultivating creativity, and fostering the love of learning.

Relational Well-being: Contributing to, and in turn, benefiting from other people by focusing on the role that the person plays in his or her social environment.

Emotional Well-being: Increasing one’s ability to experience pleasurable emotions while acquiring the resilience necessary to effectively deal with painful emotions.

This is our initial session on "energy."  This is based on extensive research by David Keane:

We have started our Health Journals. We are measuring our improved fitness over time. We have initial data from a beep test.

We will also monitor and track data on across 4 exercises:
burpees

push ups

tricep dips

leg raises

We have put ourselves into fitness groups. Some of us will be pushing ourselves to our limits, while others prefer a more gentle exercise routine. This is the route we will either run, run/ walk or walk on a regular basis.

Zane: Yesterday I did my first health journal. I went down the hill saw my house then went up the zig zag. My legs started to hurt but I got to school. Haru helped me and I helped him We also did burpees, tricep dip push ups and leg raises.

Lisa: This week was real fun I really enjoyed doing our run on Thursday my favourite activity afterwards was the leg lifts. I also enjoyed doing athletics I came around five or six on most of them my favourite one was long jump

Ethan B: We had to put ourselves into groups from four to one. Four is like you will do walking and you don't really want to run. Group one is like you really like running and you're fast. I put myself into group two and we went for a pretty big run it was quite hard but it wasn't super, super hard. Then when we came back we did a lot of exercise. We did tricep dips and they were quite hard but to me they weren't the hardest thing that we did. We also did leg ups they were probably the hardest to me. We also did burpees they actually might have been the other hardest one to me. They were really hard and doing the push ups in them were really hard. Then we did push ups and they were still very hard.

Petra: I found the fitness test REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hard. It was EXHAUSTING! First, we did a run down to the beach. We didn't go to the beach though. We didn't cross the road to the beach. We kept walking to a pedestrian only path with white hand railings that zigzagged up. After we finally got back to school, We did lots and lots of exercise. We did Burpees, Tricep Dips, Push Ups, and Leg ups. I was EXHAUSTED afterwards.

Fabian: We had to a big run to the beach and up the zig-zag way. After we did tricep dips, push ups, burpees and leg raises. I used my legs and arms and I have to work on my tricep dips.

Charlotte: I found the fitness challenge hard after doing it for a long time but it was kind-of fun. We did tricep dips, running, push ups, leg raises and burpees. It was kind-of hard because we did twenty tricep dips and ten of the rest and then we did all of them for one minute each. I used my upper body muscles.

Camp Kaitoke 2021

Camp Kaitoke 2021 - He tino pai mātou! As our school karakia says - i roto i te hari, me te koa, me te aroha. Anō o tētahi ki tētahi, kia puāwai tātou katoa! (In joy, and in love, it is together that we all flourish).

Camp Reflections- Rock, Leaf and Stick

The thing that Rocked for me...
The thing I will Leaf behind...
What will Stick with me...

Eddie:
The thing that rocked for me was the crate stacking because it it something that you don't hear everyday, ´today were going to do crate stacking.” What even is that!! It was a lot of fun.
The thing that will stick with me was the peppers, (literally, I still feel the spice), and the campfire, that was the second best part of my life.
The thing that I will leave behind is my fear of heights because I did abseiling and crate stacking because they were both high up.

Anneke:
Stick - I want my new friends to stick with me
Rock - the campfire rocked because we sang lots of funny songs
Leaf - I want to leaf behind the noise that cabin 5 made all night

Konrad
Rock: I rocked at the kayaking. I jumped out and got back on by myself and we got to see Hazel (our instructor) to do a loop around and sink.
Stick: the mud slide will stay with me because it is my last time at camp so I will remember it because it is fun we also had to cross a bridge to get there
Leaf: I will leave the chips there because the chips where as hard as a brick.

Suki-lee
Rock: I rocked at kayaking because. We got to jump out but my shoes/gumboots went sinking a little bit but at the end I got them but I had know idea I had my gumboots on when I jumped in Something that Stick: Sticked to me was the mud in the bridge of doom like my shoe almost came off in the mud but when I got out there was so much water in my shoe/gumboots.
Leaf: I will leave behind my hat because I didn't bring one anyway. So then I used John's hat but then I kept leaving John's hat in my cabin.

Yoichi
Rock: What Rocked? Ok, I'm going be honest, everything rocked… but if I have to choose one thing,  I loved singing around the campfire.
Stick: What will stick with me forever? Everything, then again Nik Mastrovich will go ‘You need to choose one thing!’ so I would say that the thing that would stick with me is… Abseiling
Leaf: What will I leave behind? My fear.

Student Led Conferences

We have been sharing our learning at our Student Led Conferences. This shows Positive Accomplishment. We have been talking about how we have been working towards our goals, how we are motivated to persist despite challenges and setbacks.

The Positive Accomplishment Literature Review from the Institute of Positive Education says that, "an essential aim of positive education is to help students develop their potential through striving for and achieving meaningful outcomes. Within the model of positive education, a focus on wellbeing and flourishing is interconnected with efforts to help students learn, achieve academically, and develop skills and competencies. Positive accomplishment involves helping students embrace opportunities, learn from disappointments, and maintain effort in the face of adversity. In the increasingly challenging, global, and competitive environment schools provide invaluable opportunities for helping students to deal proactively with both opportunities and setbacks. In addition to benefits for themselves, it is hoped that students will pursue goals and objectives that have beneficial consequences for the greater community. Integral to positive accomplishment is the pursuit of goals. Goals are believed to provide mental sign posts that direct and sustain cognitive and behavioural efforts (Covington, 2000). Helping student to develop self concordant goals is believed to be especially powerfully in increasing motivation and perseverance (Sheldon & Elliot, 1999). Similarly, helping students to cultivate mastery goals and growth mindsets ensure they will seek out feedback and view setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow (Grant & Dweck, 2003). By nurturing hope, it is believed that students will become increasingly excited about future possibilities, understand that challenges and set backs are an inevitable part of life, and develop the grit and resilience to persist when times are tough (Snyder et al., 1997). Similarly, Duckworth et al.’s (2007) work on grit emphasises that no great accomplishment is achieved without persistence and effort. Overall, it is proposed that helping students strive towards meaningful outcomes and embrace new opportunities with grit, hope, and a growth mindset equips them for success in the present and the future. Healthy Body, Healthy Mind? Reflections

Greer T: My healthy body healthy mind reflection is...
What went well was my running and pushing myself harder and being more motivated. I think I am proud of making my decision in the highly competitive because I am running with more pressure on my back. How has being healthier affected my mind? It has affected my mind because I have been more organised and relaxed And I have been proud of making good decisions about my healthy body and healthy mind. My next steps are to stay organised and relaxed and train harder for the duathlon.

Oscar: Term four healthy body healthy mind reflection
I rate my self as a 3/5 because I didn’t push my self enough but I got fitter and think I can do lots of sports. My next steps are to... carry on with the fitness build up so I can do much better at the duathlon and the next cross country and other fitness. What am I proud of the fitness level that I’ve come up to which has enabled me to run and swim faster than before.

Alex G: Reflection on healthy body healthy mind
I am proud that I am waking up later so I am more onto it. Being healthier has effected my mind by making me like to run way more and not walk as much. I rate my effort a 5/5 because I tried as hard as I could and I think I am fitter than I was before. I think could have done better by running the whole way rather than walking some of the way. I think my next steps are to drink lots of water before running because then I wont get tired as fast.

Hugo W: Healthy body Healthy mind
After all the school runs I have been feeling a lot more healthy. I have also felt like I can run for longer without taking a break. I rate myself a 3 ½ because I have been getting a lot more fit but I think could of taken less breaks.

Mia: My healthy body healthy mind reflection
For my effort I rate myself a 4 because I tried hard but sometimes I did the easy option. I am proud because every week day I had no sugar and it effects my mind because a healthy snack helps me think better. I could of improved my pace by always trying to get into my VT2 system. My next steps are to do long runs outside of school and play running games at playtime. I could and will do more stretching after a run.

Alba: Healthy body, healthy mind reflection
I am proud of myself because I have done a lot of exercise. My healthy body has not affected my mind. I could of done a bit more stretching and exercise. I got into VT2 most of the times I did exercise but I tried my best. My next steps are to do more exercise and remember to stretch after exercising.

Joel: Healthy body healthy mind reflection
I feel like this inquiry has helped be more healthy and makes be want to run around more. It also helps me wake up and go to sleep easier.

We are looking forward to our duathlon on Wednesday. We are raising money for KidsCan. You can donate: https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/worserbayduathlon
