Walking the Length of New Zealand

Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 are seeking ‘donations’ of steps from their school community in an effort to cover the length of NZ in one day. We are trying to walk the whole of NZ in 24 hours.

We need each of you to donate 10,000 steps on Thursday 24th of September 2020. Make sure to ask everyone you know, even animals and your great, great, great, great Grandparents.

If we told you you would need 278 people, walking 10,000 steps each to walk from Cape Reinga to Bluff would you be up for the challenge? Think of it as a fundraising event without the fundraising.

Friends, Family, Pets: Please send us pictures and a short explanation of your walk/run on 24th September so that we can share them on our blog. Please make sure you join our quest to walk NZ in 24 hours!

Our Brains are Growing!

A wee while ago I was watching a movie. The scene below came on and it made me think about how our brain grows when we're faced with a challenge. See what you think??

I showed it to the students in Matariki, to see what they thought.. They quickly incorporated it into their 'mistake dance'.

In Māhutonga/Matariki we are learning to embrace our mistakes, celebrating them as BRAIN GROWTH!

"When we make a mistake we shout gleefully 'I made a mistake!'" - Amelia

"When we make a mistake it helps our mind to learn more things" - Jack

"If you don't make mistake then you won't learn anything" - Ajooni

Writing Talk

So you've heard about the wonderful world of Number Talks.. but how could we take this precious dialogue to our literacy programme? Well today we had great success with a Writing Talk!

Using an exemplar of explanation writing 'what happens when you fall asleep?' we discussed different aspects of the texts and its effect.

We had some great thoughts around the structure of the piece and lots of students were quick to give their advice on improvement.

We have been working hard at discourse, making sure we a listening and adding on to our peers thoughts. This helps us to to learn together!

Positive Education Workshops

We have been consolidating our learning in Positive Education by planning workshops to share with others.

We have been working hard in Positive education to better understand the science of brain function - tricky stuff! We have managed to plan amazing workshops to share all our important learning around this.

Last week we presented these to Tautoru. We showed great Leadership and Love of Learning... and perhaps a little patience!

We are so keen to share these with you at Student Led Conferences - so come along on Tuesday next week to see what we've been up to... and perhaps learn something new!
