Font and Colour - Visual Language

In our mahi towards creating a school Zine we have been working on understanding colour and fonts with greater depth. These skills will help us to create high quality work for our Zine.

We have been learning about how colour can be used to make us feel a certain way, this is used in advertising all around us! For example, we had some thoughtful discussions around how the colour red can mean love but also anger. We recognised that characters in cartoons often have red faces to show us they're angry.

We also have looked at the way in which colour from across the colour wheel can contrast and look effective.

We had a good dose of fun creating our own colour palettes which we have even named.

We anticipate the work we have done this week will help us as we tackle the next phase of the Zine. Exciting times!

Zine (a work in progress)

We are ramping up our creative juices in a push to create content for the Zine. We have begun to make comics, diagrams, posters etc etc. We have LOVED having a go on Canva and creating some content using the programme. We are still honing our design skills and there will be more work on this in the coming weeks... Watch this space!

Information about our Inquiry from a previous post:

"Our Inquiry is called ‘Words and Pictures, Igniting the imagination’.

This Inquiry links to our school-wide Writing and Inquiry focus, creating a Zine which we can share with the Worser Bay community and beyond! We are beginning to work on different form of Visual Literacy and are learning more about magazines in general to generate inspiration."

We are using our on Visual Language Checklist to make sure what we are creating is 'quality work'

Grit in P.E.

We have been dialling up our Grit in our P.E. this week. We have been improving our core strength and coordination by doing an Obstacle Challenge.

We are learning the importance of a strong core! It will help us to sit up straight and breathe properly. Developing core strength is something we will work on our whole lives!

Mapping Miramar's Magic Places

Mapping Miramar's Magic Places!

We have been getting inspired, thinking about ideas for our upcoming Zine.  Raife has been doing amazing comics, even working through his lunchtime because he's loving it.  He imagined a whole lot of incredible things which he thought would be cool for Miramar in the future.  How would you feel about 'Hotel Raife' being built at Ōruaiti Reserve?

Draft Map of Te Motukairangi/Miramar Peninsula

One of our big ideas is making a map of the Miramar Peninsular.  Using pictures which 'tell a thousand words', we are describing our Magic Places, introducing them to each other.
One of Henry's Magic Places is Fort Balance.  This is also a historic place and one which we would like to take a closer look at.  In a few weeks we aim to set off on an expedition to explore these new places, special places and historic sites.

We will keep adding to our map and will get a team producing it, ready for the prototype Zine which will be ready early term 2.

Sarah Laing Visit

Our Inquiry is called ‘Words and Pictures, Igniting the imagination’.

This Inquiry links to our school-wide Writing and Inquiry focus, creating a Zine which we can share with the Worser Bay community and beyond! We are beginning to work on different form of Visual Literacy and are learning more about magazines in general to generate inspiration.

To give us some inspiration, Sarah Laing came to visit us. She is an author/ illustrator

Isabella: Sarah Laing came to school. She is an author and she does comic and non-fiction books and today she showed us how to be free in art, let it flow. She inspired me to do a comic myself.

Lachlan: we learnt to draw stuff like eyes for a human. It was very fun we made comics as well. We learnt how to draw a face.

Scarlett: Sarah asked us if we like comics. Lots of people liked Dog Man. She made me what to do more art than I do. I think she needs to use a lot of bravery, hope, teamwork and kindness in her job. We made a comic. Mine was about Tui's birthday. It was very cool that she came to our school.

Freddie: Sarah is an amazing artist and her style is like a dictionary comic. She is a very good drawer. She proved that simple can be better. Sarah uses perseverance, bravery and leadership. I think that she uses bravery because she has to show her work to people that she does not know.

Tommy: I liked when Sarah came to visit. I was inspired by her comics and novels. I am more inspired than ever before.

Monty: We learnt about distances/ perspective in drawing. Sarah drew emotions behind wearing a mask. I'm inspired by how she can draw like her style and how she is inspired by anything. The strengths I used was creativity because I am proud of the mini comic that I made.

Leo M: Sarah uses creativity in her work. We got to make our own comics. I loved it. It was so much fun!

Violet: Sarah is a great drawer she writes awesome comics. She is also very creative with her work. She likes telling people what she is up to and makes her self very clear. When she came to visit she helped us write a comic and it was very fun.

Lisa: Sarah Laing came to show us some of her work. She makes comics and illustrated some pictures in 'Go Girl'. One of her books was about lockdown. She said that her comics are like diaries. She uses a lot of creativity and perseverance to make her comics. We are inspired by her and we made our own comics.

Nikita: Sarah Laing is a very talented artist. She writes books and comics. She is inspired by all these different people with different talents. She shows lots of character strengths like creativity, bravery and humour. She also has grit. She inspires me because of all the cool books and comics she writes.

Our Strengths Portraits

We have been thinking about our strengths. Research shows that people who identify top strengths in positive ways throughout the day are happier and more successful in their pursuit of goals. We are learning that people who focus on their strengths are grittier, happier and more successful.

In our portraits, we identified our top strengths. We have been dialing up these strengths when things are challenging!
