Sustainable Coastlines

Last Friday the Student Council went down to the beach to clean up rubbish with Te Kawa from the Sustainable Coastlines organisation. We found plastic, metal, rubber and cigarette ends (they are not natural).

We found plastic, metal, rubber and cigarette ends (they are not natural). Once we had made our way down to the end of the beach we went up the stairs and made our way on to the road/ foot-path to start cleaning up rubbish. Then we came back down the beach for one last clean up.

We need your help!!! The sustainable coastline guys are organising a large scale coastal clean-up this weekend. It's being held out at Makara Beach on Saturday 24th November from 10:00am People can register online at this link here:

Homework: Week 2, Term 4

The quality of the homework continues to improve, keep the great work coming. We are finding that this work is helping to support and inform what we do in class.

This week, please find out about the New Zealand artist, Len Lye.

In the holidays...

The 10th tooth

Light shone into my eyes, a metal strap was wrapped
around my tooth, a crunching sound was going on
inside my mouth. Suddenly it stopped and a man took
out a white blood stained object and replaced it with a
piece of cotton wool. It was over. I had lost my 10th
tooth.

Beach

The sand crunched beneath my feet and the
wind blew against my face as I walked along the
beach. I lay down and let the soft, silky sand
slide beneath my fingers while I heard the waves
crashing against the shore. The salt, light as air
slipped into my open mouth. Children laughing
and screaming, jumping and playing while I sat
still as a stone, looking and listening.

Bye Bye to our Favourite Mermaid!

This Friday we will be losing our favourite mermaid lover from Māhutonga/ Matariki. Grace is moving to Palmerston North. We will miss her dearly because she is a dynamic person filled so much energy and spunk. She will certainly be missed.

Some people may say she is a mermaid herself. It may be true…

Bullying

Bullying is a word that means threatening, hurting feelings, texting and sometimes violence. Bullying is when someone targets a person and is mean to them for a long time or over and over again.

We did some drama about bullying in the playground. Some people were being bullied, some were bullies and some were bystanders (people who are watching but not doing anything). There is also a teacher and people who are sticking up for the bullied person.

Debate

In Mahutonga and Matariki we have been learning to write a debate. We read articles in the newspaper and the internet such as "Cats are killers" and wrote about a subject we were concerned about. Afterwards we learnt how to make visual language such as posters, advertisements, and how to argue a debate with other people. We had to come up with strong statements that are hard to argue about. We got into groups and discussed ideas to convince the other groups.

¨ Here are some things  we have been debating about in class:
¨ The New Zealand flag and if we should change it or not.
¨ Fracking: it should be banned
¨ Cats are killers and we should exterminate/not exterminate them.
¨ NZ native birds, animals and the pests in New Zealand,
¨ Whaling,
¨ Trees should not be wasted for paper and cut down,
¨  Water should not be wasted.

Come into our classrooms and see our reports!!!
