Fantastic First Day of Planting

At Worser Bay School we have planted some feijoas, a lemon tree, sunflowers, peas, cucumber, cherry tomatoes and red peppers

We hope that these  grow so they will look good, and taste nice.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

If you are playing with any balls please be careful not to hit the plants.

Please do not dig in the boxes because there are little seeds growing in them.

Super Sleepover!

The Year 3 and 4 Sleepover was a chance for the children to grow some independence and reconnect with classmates from the past who will be mingling and mixing again in 2015.

Inquiry challenges

We are exploring invention and innovation in inquiry at the moment. Yesterday we completed some BP challenges (http://www.starters.co.nz/bpchallenge-index.html) to tune in to what we could invent or innovate. We were trying to create a stretcher that could carry a classmate, a marble run so our marble could hit a target and a "picker" to remove a ball from a high, unstable place.

13 Storey Treehouse

We have been reading the 13 Storey Treehouse in Nicola's Literacy group:

The story was about 2 boys who write stories and they go on interesting adventures. They have a boss who has a really big nose. Each time they write another book they add 13 storeys, each storey has a different thing on it. - Meg

The story was about making sea monkeys, finding a sea monster in the sea monkey eggs and they had a giant gorilla smashing the tree. - Angelina 

Why we liked the story:

Louis - I liked it because you could understand it. And it was a really cool book because it was crazy and you didn't know what would happen next.

Meg - I liked it because you didn't know what was going to happen. I think Emma R, Milly, Molly and Josie would really enjoy it.

James - I liked it because it was interesting and fun and adventurous.

Angelina - I liked it because its awesome.

Blake - I liked it because its a good and classic book. I think my friend Milo should read it.

Takehisa - I liked it because it has lots of funny words and its not just a book it was picture book as well.

Eleanor - I liked it because I love books. My friends Kayla, Hanne and Emma C should read it.

Jasper - I liked it because its very interesting and its a really good book. I think Luca should read it.

Louise - I liked it because it describes the characters, what they do and what they have in their tree house.

Why we think other people should read it:

Rory - It's really funny and I think it's a good level for little kids. Rory thinks his cousin Mat should read it.

Oto - Its good and its exciting. I think Nahim would enjoy it.

Xander - It's a funny and because I liked the ending. I think Linnea would enjoy it.

Molly - Because it's very adventurous and fun to read, you don't know what's going to happen next. I think my brother should read it.

Sophia - Because it's a fun and wacky book.

Louise -Because it's not too hard to read and it is interesting and it doesn't take up a lot of reading time, it's quick to read. Arthur and Evie should read it!

Maori Rotations - A full day of it

Today we explored Maori cooking, art, dance, singing and drama. Have a look at what we did!

Fantastic Floorball- Eastern Zones Tournament!

Natalie: Today we went to the ASB arena to play Floorball. We used up a lot of energy. Most of it was really challenging. Both of the WBS teams played seven games against different teams.

Gretel: Everyone was surprised and happy at the same time when our team won the sportsmanship and fair play award.

Frankie: We tried our best and that was great!

Billy: It was just so much fun!

Takehisa: It felt good to score goals against another team.

Emma: It was good to save a goal.

Liam G: I like the combination of hockey and football.

Louie: I liked playing floorball today because people were playing fair.

Message from Nicola: It was an absolute pleasure taking these children to the ASB arena. I am not surprised that they won the sportsmanship and fair play awards. They represented Worser Bay wonderfully and their behaviour and manners were exceptional!

A big thank you to all of the parents (and Ruth) who provided the transport. Also, a huge thank you to Hannah, who organised the teams throughout the day! 

Nicola's Literacy class has been busy!!

This week in Nicola's literacy class we have been super busy! One group has done a play about animals. For spelling we have made silly sentences and drawn our words on the chalkboard.

I stoked the bright red fire when we went to the dark forest.

A tall bloke walked past me and shouted, "hi, I like pie".

A have green eggs on toast for my breakfast, what a great start to the day.

A train killed me last Monday morning on the way to school. I was brought back to life by Arthur.

Maori Rotations - Designing our own Mokos

Designing our own Mokos 

Today in Maori, one group designed their own Mokos. We learnt that a Moko is a traditional Maori Tattoo that contains ancestral/ tribal messages specific to the wearer.

Stained "Glass" Windows - Maori Rotation

We made stained glass windows on Tuesday, it was a great experience for us because we got to learn more about our Maori culture. It was fun learning about all the different Maori patterns. First, we drew our design in our visual diaries, Then, we got handed a base for the real ones, and next, we paint the patterns on the base, and last, we waited for them to dry.

This was all for our Maori rotations, there was stained glass, poi, Moko, Haka, contemporary dance, and dancing with poi.

Technical words

This week we are starting our explanation writing unit.

Today in Nicola's Literacy class we watched a movie about a man who makes shirts. From the movie we brainstormed some technical words about the shirt machine. Tomorrow we will use these in our writing.

The Poetry Masters

Nicola's Literacy class published their poems this week in a book. The book can be issued from the library, its called The Poetry Masters.

Over the weekend it will be also uploaded onto the library website in PDF form. It can be found via this link http://101.98.68.2:2000/.

Maori Rotations

Today in Maori we had a choice of 4 different classes:

• Making Maori inspired stained "glass" windows
• Creating a Haka
• Contemporary Maori Dance
• Making Poi 

During these classes we focused on how Maori art, dance and language can inspire our learning.

The PAL's played a game of tag, and ran jump jam at morning tea today. Thanks PAL's.

Rotations

This morning we have a rotation happening. Floorball, inquiry and the Star test. For the inquiry we were lucky enough to have Andy come in and talk to us about innovation and invention. We looked at some really interesting medical innovations like skin grafts, as well as some other inventions. Please chat to us at home to find out what else we found out about.

Inquiry - Invention and Innovation

Yesterday in inquiry we explored different inventions and innovations. We were able to touch and play with different objects while we asked questions like "when was this invented?" and "why would you need this?"

Today we followed this up by asking "Are these inventions useful?"

Jolly Hockeysticks! Practising for Eastern Zones Hockey Tournament

Today we practiced the key skills of hockey to train us for the Eastern Zones tournament. We rounded off with an exciting game of 'King of the Ring'. What fun!
