Exploring Statistical Enquiries

We have begun to delve into the world of statistics in Matariki and Mahutonga, looking at the steps of a statistical investigation and then completing our own.  In the kids own words, Statistics is getting people's ideas about questions and showing it.  

We were introduced to the cycle and the steps:

Explored creating some of the different types of graphs as a class:

Then began organising our own investigation around the group's favourite desserts.  Tamariki had to decide if their questions were opened or closed, figure out how they'd manage their data and then choose a graph to show their findings:

Values Posters:

 We are thinking about the things we care about, about how we share some of these ideas with our families and how we are influenced by the ideas of the people around us. There has been some amazing writing produced recently in which kids have considered the factors which influence and shape their identity.  There has been rich learning about DNA or 'Nature', as well as the social factors, 'Nurture' which contribute to our personalities and identity.

Values: What do we believe in and what do we care about?

  When asked what we care about most one of us immediately said 'Scootering!'  After that we thought we better do some more digging. And we are reading Holes which has A LOT OF DIGGING in it and has thrown up some really interesting questions for us. 

What is luck? Are some people just unlucky? Do you make your own luck?

What is justice? Is punishment a necessary part of justice? What is learned through punishment? What are the elements of justice? 

Some people said that there is always a need to get revenge if there has been a crime. Others noted that they have not learned much from being punished, that maybe Stanley in the book would learn more form being educated. 

We discussed the idea that a society should not be judged by the way it treats its outstanding citizens, but by the way it treats its criminals. (Dostoyevsky)

Whānau Day - Matariki

 

In our whānau groups, we explored stories of the Matariki star cluster from around the world. Ask us what we learnt at home...

Whānau groups are groups of children and teachers across the school. There is an added bonus- siblings and families work together. Teachers and students learn from each other! We have been thinking about Tuakana/ Teina. The older students teach the younger students. The roles can also be reversed. We saw this with great energy on Friday!

Sketching - Gearing up for the Arts Celebration

 

We are gearing up for our Arts Celebration. As part of our Inquiry rotations, we are learning to sketch. In this session, we sketched people in lots of different ways. Some examples are that we used '1000 lines,' sketched with our non-dominant hand, sketched people upside down, we used different mediums and looked closely at people's faces. Ask us about this at home... 

Te Papa Trip

On the last day of Term 2, we went to Te Papa. This was linked to our whakapapa Inquiry. 

We had a session with an educator to discuss immigration. We explored migrations to Aotearoa from the Pacific, Europe and across the world. It was great to think about our own whakapapa too. We learnt about the knowledge, skills, and taonga navigators from around the Pacific brought to Aotearoa. We also discussed how early explorers adapted to and shaped Aotearoa into the country it is today. We learnt about the journeys of 19th and 20th century arrivals from across the globe and how they continue up to the present day.

Next term, we will be looking forward and preparing for the Arts Celebration. We will be learning and creating portraits ourselves. How can we create a collage to capture our own identity?
