Picture is a bit small (big one here: http://www.annexed.net/images/escher/reptiles.jpg) and here's what I think:
Escher was an amazing man who cleverly made us (well, me) think about his drawings and look for the surprises. This one has the lizards coming out of the page and coming to life, wicked.
I think it looks busy as there are lots of items in the drawing. It is also like the spinning globe in the side bar as the lizards seem to be stuck going around and around. They dissolve into the paper and are reborn to climb the book. Is this your favourite Escher picture? ^librarykris
there are lizzards comming out of a picture and going in (again). David
