Praying Mantises by Ethan

Since lockdown began, Ethan has been working on his own Inquiry inspired by the 'What is in your backyard?' activity.

Now that it is finally complete, Ethan wants to share his learning with everyone. What a wonderful way to showcase all our Learner Attributes! He tino pai tō mahi, Ethan.

There is a very special message at the end that Ethan would like everybody to take away from this.

Enjoy!

I have a question. Hummingbirds are so fast with their figure 8 wing beat! And Praying mantises are so small! How does a praying mantis catch a hummingbird? I enjoyed this inquiry slide show :)

    1. Thanks Caleb! I'm glad you liked it. Good question. It's pretty rare but it is possible. The mantids wait under the edge of bird feeders (they're attracted by the sugary water) and when the hummingbird is near they reach out and grab it. Check out this link for some gruesome photos! Ick!
