Maori: Hongi me te Mihi

We begin the session with a hongi, everybody greets each other.

It is Te Wiki o te Reo Maori and just another week of Maori for us.

To begin each session we hongi, an exchange of breath and then mihi to each other.  Some people are becoming really fluent with theirs.  We are also making the mihi into a digital presentation to share at SLCs.  

Some of the additional phrases we have been using include:

No hea Koe - Where are you from? Practicing pronouncing Maori place names correctly

He aha tenei? - What is this?

He tino pai to mahi e hoa! - Good job mate!

Inspirational People Portraits

Our students have been writing biographies about people that inspire them. These people have used their power to influence positive change. Our students have created portraits to represent their inspirational person.

Maths in Matariki Mahutonga!

This week in Maths we have been looking at fractions! We used oranges to see what different fractions  looked like. Here is a summary of our different fractions!!

 Lycra, big hair, sweatbands, roller skates, vinyl jackets - so many awesome dress up opportunities!!

Languages - learning German

 We're lucky to be having language rotations on Thursday afternoons. The students are currently doing a rotation of Maori (with John), Mandarin (with Wanwan from Tautoru), German (with Sarka, a parent) and French (with Cloe, a parent and teacher aide).

In German we've recently been learning how to have simple conversations and learning the colours. We need to practise, practise, practise to learn the new words.

Statistical Investigations - Do we interact enough with our families? What gets in the way?

As part of of Power of the People Inquiry, we thought about how we can bring greater peace in our families. Something that came out of this was - are we interacting enough with our families? And if so, what do we do when interacting with them? What is getting in the way?

John and Anna's Maths groups decided to create our own Statistical Investigation's to try an answer the question
'Are people at Worser Bay School interacting with their families?'

It was a really tricky one with lots of different aspects - but our end goal was to start to think about taking initiative to hang out with our parents and families.

We all posed different questions around screen time, after school activities, eating around the dinner table and many more.

We followed the 'POSE a Question, PLAN an investigation, collect DATA, ANALYSE our data, and then make some CONCLUSIONS cycle' - also known as PPDAC.

Here is some of the findings we found!

We hope that after this investigation, we are inspired to think more about the POWER we have to decide what we do after school and if we are making the most of that decision.
