This is a positive weather forecast |
Before we get the togs on for Beach Week 2019, we had some thinking to do.
'Whiti te rā' - you may recognise from the haka Ka Mate - means 'into the sunlight. We are in awe of the sun's power, here's a Kenning by Bea:
The sun is…
A huge ball of fire
A sunscreen killer
An Earth enemy
A chemical reactor
A sunny day champion
A skin burner
A corn popper
We connected to our statistics learning, finding out that a massive 80% of NZ cancers are in the skin. We also know most of them are preventable, and the statistics are within our power to change.
We've been thinking about how to get these messages out, so watch out for some Public Service Broadcasts!
'Kia tūpato ki te wai!' (Stay safe in the water!) - We're also thinking about being safe in the sea. We know heaps already about Beach Safety. Nik's base group came up with these ideas:
...which were pretty close to Surf Life Saving NZ's 5 top beach safety rules, that we then matched up...
We're ready to get out there - vigilant, careful swimmers well-protected from the sun. Choice!
