Today we had a Base Group (Tribe) Castle Challenge. Tribes were asked to build a castle and make a flag. They had to work together as a base group without any teacher input. Tribes had to decide on roles and responsibilities. They also had to decide on a name for their tribe.
Tribes were given a spaces in the school as territories and were given some materials that they could use. They would have to negotiate with other tribes to have the necessary materials to build a safe castle.
At the end of the day, we played "Capture the Flag."
It will be interesting to hear the reflections of the tribes tomorrow and how they link this to our Inquiry: People Power.
The village of Parihaka was a thriving community from 1866 until 1881.
We have been finding out about the village of Parihaka in Taranaki. The people of Parihaka, led by Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi responded to the aggression of the government of the day with peaceful protest.
Kaia found out that in June this year the Government apologised to the people of Parihaka.
She has some questions she is currently researching. These include:
Why did the crown want to take over Parihaka?
Why was parihaka called parihaka?
When did Parihaka become a settlement?
How did Parihaka choose their chief?
What whaka did the people of parihaka come on?
What is the history of Te Whiti and Tohu?
Why didnt Te Whiti use violence to get his land back?
Why didn't the government apologise sooner?
We will continue to dig for answers as we find out more about this incredible story.
What a beautiful, sunny day! After lunch, we all walked down to beach and enjoyed some outdoor play.
We had Warrior Queens guarding their castles, army troopers digging a tunnel, town planners making a city (including a place specifically to do flips), cafe owners running a cafe selling mussels, cross country trainers, Donald Trump supporters creating a wall, creators of a sand and shell dragon - what didn't we have!
It was incredible the way a sunny day, and some creativity can make imaginative and fun play.
Today we did an experiment where half the group got a dot sticker on their hand. The people that had a dot on their hand got to play anywhere at morning tea and got to use computers and got to boss the people with no dots around. They had 9:00 - 12:00 to use the things they got to use. It was unfair to the people who didn't have a dot. When you didn't have a dot you could only play in the court ground and didn't get to sit on chairs and couldn't use computers or iPads. I thought it wasn't fair. At 12:00-3:00 the people that had no dot got to do what the dot people got to do in the morning. I thought this was sort of fun but it wasn't fair for the others so I didn't boss people around. By Mia
Today we did an experiment. People with dots had power like siting on chairs or making people do stuff for like get as a pencil or tell them to do a joke. The people who did not have the dots could not sit on chairs or use a chrome book or have any power. But if someone who had a dot asked you for something you would have to do it. But then we swaped and it did not fell right because my friends did not have the dot. By Isabel
When I was powerful I felt like I was kind of normal but people could only stay at middle court and the other kids could go all around the school. I thought that the others were not very happy and some people didn't listen to the people who were powerful .
When I was not powerful I would just go with the flow. By Eleanor

Today some people had dots on their hands. If they had a dot they get to use chrome books and sit on ottomans and chairs. The people with no dots weren't allowed to use chrome books, not allowed to sit on ottomans or chairs. They had to sit or kneel on the ground. At the start I didn't have a dot but Mitchell gave me the dot power. That means I can do what the dot people can do even though I didn't have a dot. I let him borrow some of my pens. I think it was fair because everyone got a turn, but at the start some people were trying to get a turn with a dot. It was hard not having a dot. I had to sit on the floor. I felt good at the start but after a while I didn't feel so good until Mitchell gave me the dot. By Lachlan
Our Inquiry is about the Power of People and how they can influence positive change. Today we started to think about what we would change if we could change ANYTHING! Here are some of our ideas.
This is some of us working together in the helping circle to edit our writing about what we would change...
Recently we have been Skypeing with Aurora School. We have been reading and sharing poems and art with them. We have been doing a display of poems and art to go with it we decided to pick an animal and did a poem and picture to go with it and the poem is about the wind wishing to be an animal. These are some animals we did cat, dog x3, giraffe ,whale, pig and fox .
Sometimes we talk about what we have been learning at school or we read together or they show as some work they have been doing. They are doing a presentation for some of their work and they are going to send it to us.
Today they showed us a display that they have been making about us. If you come into the classroom, you can see the display that we made about them.
We wrote a story about Sid the Snail as a "Quick Write." The challenge was to include as much shape vocabulary as possible. We had 10 minutes to write... Sid the snail was in a grumpy mood that day so he didn’t go for his big morning walk around his large pentagon garden. Surprisingly that day his potatoes grew to dodecahedrons instead of circles. His house was a triangular prism. His dog is a rectangle. Sid loves parallel things but his favourite shape was a sphere. By Hunter T A snail shaped story Once there was a snail called Sid. Although he was slow, he liked to roam around the the square garden and the cube bird bath.
He loved to paddle in the small rectangular perimeter of the puddle in the corner of the square area in the garden.
Sid wanted more than the square garden and the cube bird bath so he made his way out of the octahedron shaped gate.
The world outside of the square garden, the town, was full of shapes. The church was a pyramid and the town square was as beautiful as the garden the circular fountain reminded him of the cube bird bath. By Kaia
Snail Shape Story Diamond the snail liked to go around the perimeter of the garden and liked to travel in a parallel lines. She went travelled through the area of the house. The house was a square. The table was a rectangle. The bed was a rock the shape of a pentagon. The face of the house was smaller and the bottom of the house was bigger and the roof was large but the backyard was the largest. She loved her ice cream cone. She ate it in her pyramid house and the ice cream scoop was a cube. By Lily V There once was a snail called Sid and he lived in a beautiful rectangular garden with a lot of shapes in it. One day Sid the snail went around the perimeter of the garden, he saw a lot of shapes and that this were this story starts. So slowly walking around the perimeter of the garden he first saw a cube through a triangular window. Next he saw a dodecahedron painting through a square window and when he turned the corner he saw a pyramid. He looked straight up to see some parallel lines then a circular window with 2 lines through it. A sphere was his favourite shape. By Alex P There was once a snail called Sid and he was very slow but he still liked shapes and he went as fast as he could round the perimeter of the garden then he went into the area of the garden and helped himself to the circle apple. The square garden was bigger than the park that was rectangular and bigger than the pentagon park. His house was a triangular prism and the top of his house had a triangle face. His favourite toy was a 3D square and he enjoyed eating at a semi circle picnic table. By Alex G
Zach, Thomas and Lucas were on the movie team for our Arts Celebration. They did a wonderful job putting this movie together. On the night they provided popcorn for the movie screenings.

We sing multiplication songs every day at the beginning of our Maths sessions. Some of our students used their creativity and made up their own songs.
We are Maths buddies. Today we went to Autahi and did number bonds to ten with them. We taught them how to + and - to ten in different ways. Some examples are 8+2=10, 7+3 = 10, 4+6=10 or 2 +8=10

Thank you to our great Maths Buddies. Brain science tells us that teaching something to someone else helps the learning to stick.
It's been a busy time but it was all worth it! Thanks to all the great effort that was put in by the students, with some support from home we had a beautiful and successful evening. Please watch this video to get a feel for many of the spaces. There was a wide variety of art on display as well as poetry and wind sculptures. The movie and popcorn were very popular! There was a sense of the process we went through, including prototypes, diagrams and explanation writing. Thanks for the fabulous community support.
At Worser Bay school we have a value called respect. We respect ourselves by ignoring things we don't like. I respect myself by making good decisions. Another part is to respect each other. If people get hurt you can help them. You can give them an ice pack if they want one. We need to respect the school environment. You also have to respect school equipment and put it back in the PE shed. If there is something on the floor then you put it away. Computers go in the safe. I am good at putting the computers away in the safe. By Lachlan Our school value is respect. We care about ourselves, each other and the environment. When we care about ourselves we don’t rip our books we keep our tote trays tidy and we listen. When we care about each other we help out, we don’t fight and we respect other people's things. When we care about the environment we don’t snap pencils, we don’t leave chromebooks and ipads on the ground, we don’t leave wrappers and plastic lying around on the ground, we don’t pull leaves of plants and we don’t throw things around. By Alba At Worser bay school we have one main rule and it is respect. We respect ourselves and each other and the environment and our things. We look after ourselves by being healthy and we try to be fit. We look after each other by helping them and being kind and letting people play with us. We look after the environment by watering plants and not kicking trees or pulling of branches and we respect the birds to. We look after our things by putting then away in the right spot and plugging in computers and iPads when they are low on charge. By Mia At worser bay we have one value, Manaakitanga, respect. At worser bay we have to respect ourselves by respecting our health and mana (power). We also respect our environment and our classrooms.
By doing this we are not leaving pencils on the floor, not leaving Chromebooks on the floor and most of all we respect the schools sport equipment. We have to also respect each other and their uniqueness because being different is great! By Elliot At Worser Bay School we have One value, it is respect. We respect our things, respect ourselves/ each other and respect the environment. If we don’t respect those things then we need to… fess up, fix up and catch up. That’s how we can solve mistakes. For example, if your mum told you to get ready for school. If you ignored her and do silly things, eventually you will get in trouble. If you want to make it up then...fess up,fix up and catch up. By Liam S At worser bay school we have 1 rule and it is respect for the environment each other and ourselves We call it Manaakitanga. Respect for the environment you can help by not littering clean up after yourself and some other things. Respect for each other is be nice don't use bad language and do not bully people. Respect for yourself is not bully people don't make a clown out of yourself and anything you think is bad do not do it. By Joel
We are excited about the art exhibition because we get to present our sculptures then and show our work in front of our parents, family and friends. My groups sculpture is called the fly fighters. They are made to blow in the wind. On one side there is a tie fighter and on the other there is a x wing from star wars. They work because of a bearing attached to dowels which blow the planes around when the wind blows them. We are going to attach the the fly fighters with tape so the fighters will hang on the ceiling with the tape. I am also excited about seeing other group's sculptures as well. We have been doing other art as well like the cherry blossom trees made with ink and straws. And paper stars for Matariki in them I chose Ururangi for my star. One of my favourite sculptures was the ones on bottom grass. They spin in the wind. There is a big one that stands on a pole. And the other ones stand on bricks or the ground. The fastest one is the medium sized one it is also my favourite wind sculpture that uses wood and wind. And for my sculpture we also had to do a prototype so we knew what the sculpture looks like and if it would work or not. We tested the prototype with Henry's fan and it worked.
Come and see our wonderful art on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th at 5-7pm.
