Taxes: Thinking about how and why we pay tax.

We placed ourselves on a continuum indicating how much of tax we think is a reasonable amount to pay.  To the far left, 0% to the far right 100%.  Most kids thought they would be happy to pay about 40%.  Generous kids!

We had great conversations about why we should our should not pay tax. 

For:

• Shows we care
• It helps house people
• Provides health care
• Education
• Protects the law, police, lawyers and judges
• Gives people power to help themselves

Against

• I want to keep all my own money that I have earned
• People need to taker responsibility for themselves
• I don't trust the government to spend the money they collect from tax in appropriate ways

We decided that without tax most people wouldn't know how to contribute to help others in need.  

It was interesting thinking about the differences between tax and charity.
